I have a very soft spot in my heart for St Aloysius retreat house in San Jose CA. I have, over the years, worked through some tough times and made some major decisions as a result of retreats made there. As compromised as the SSPX may be of late, I still believe that this place, and others like it, do an immense amount of good.

We have so much to thank Archbishop Lefebvre for, including that he had the grace and foresight to make Ignatian retreats a part of the SSPX. I think this was just one of his master strokes of genius and grace. To establish retreat centres, oases where souls can go to drink cool, clear water every few years. I think one reason why for many years the SSPX boasted legions of strong, uncompromising priests was the Ignatian retreat. I miss the old days.

For some time my wife and I were on a 3-5 year rotation with retreats. I honestly could not recommend making a retreat more.

The compromises and changes in the SSPX have, over the last 12 years, made me seriously reconsider including them in my will. However, one beneficiary that I cannot (yet) bring myself to write out of my will has been the SSPX retreat house in California.
It is a very beautiful peaceful location.  I was also lucky enough to have a retreat their many years ago.

I went on two at SSPX in Ridgefield when Fr. Zendejas was prior.  Both were excellent.  I attempted to go to another Resistance retreat and ended up working in the kitchen and picking up the groceries all but the first day.  The nearest town with a supermarket that sold items in bulk was 21 miles away.  It turned out besides the priests, I was the only one able to drive a standard transmission.  At least they didn’t charge me!
I’d like to make another retreat, but the timing is never right or it’s too far away for my budget.

I did a retreat first year at St. Thomas Aquinas in 1994.  I had another retreat about circa five years later.  So it has been 30 years I guess.  Wow, how time flies!

I have thought about a retreat so many times lately but am afraid of being disappointed. I had gone to retreats held by Fr. Libietis which were outstanding. Any that I would attend now would not hold up in comparison.

Msgr. Byrne is indeed in Atlanta Georgia now but unfortunately may have buried his talent as he has not offered any retreats, Ignatian, Lenten or otherwise.
