  • Me and my brother both work at the same place and share a house together. Our Job situation does not look like it will last much longer. Several full-time employees  have quit and more are on the verge of quitting  as the company brings in more temps.

The company is having trouble finding enough people who are willing to run the machines with mostly temps and faster production speeds. Outdated equipment is not getting replaced or fixed fast enough. Our customers are suffering through  these delays and I am sure they are not very happy.

For now, me and my brother have a job at this place, but, we don't know for how long. I hate this job, but, this job pays the bills, I have a house and car payment to make and would not know what to do if me and my brother lose our jobs.

Times look like they will only get worse and I wonder what Gods plan is for all of us while we are still here to face these troubles.

  • I think it would be best to be proactive and look into training for a new career.  Have you thought about the trades?  You could call the local union headquarters and find out what it takes to learn their respective trade.  A friend of my son looked into becoming an electrician and they would have paid him a living wage while training him.

I do know that just worrying and waiting for unemployment to strike is not a plan for success.  Sometimes the unemployment office will pay for retraining, but you have to be unemployed and also able to survive on the few hundred dollars a month you get on unemployment while training.

The medical field will be expanding with the increase in baby-boomers so exploring that field might be worth your time.  Perhaps someone here knows about becoming an X-ray tech, ultra sound tech, or lab tech?

  • That's good practical advice, Marsha.  Change is the only constant in life.  I went to school for accounting and worked in that field for 7 years but couldn't pass the full CPA exam.  So close!  Well, it was a blessing because I didn't really like accounting anyway.  Now I work in a finance/IT role.  God has a plan.  Pray to St Joseph, the Worker and he'll find you a new career.

  • See if there are any Diesel mechanic programs around you. I work at a trade school, and some students 'starting' pay is well over $30 per hour; the median starting pay for these guys is around $28/$29 per hour, plus benefits. Good luck!

  • Any young men interested in a career with the electrical trades should contact the International Brotherhood of Electrical workers Union. They hold training programs, they do an apprenticeship and is the way to employment in that field.  My husband was a member in NYC IBEW Local  3 for 25 years. Good paying jobs, pensions, health/dental benefits.  My Grandson is going to go for the program they offer in Scranton, PA after he graduates.
