How can we benefit from this story?

  • My first thought when reading this story? "Why does a factory have to run on Sunday? Do we really need THAT many of that particular widget that these men have to work on a Sunday morning when they should be at Mass with their families?"

I mean, they would just have to cut back on advertising a bit (which generates the pseudo-demand for various gadgets) and they'd be fine shutting down on Sunday. But you see, the corporation probably wants to MAXIMIZE PROFIT which, alas, is the SOLE motive these days.

REDWOOD CITY -- Police were calling the death of an 18-year-old man who apparently drowned in a vat of sulfuric acid in Redwood City Sunday morning "an industrial accident."

According to Sgt. Steve Dowden officials believe fumes from the various chemicals used at the Costal Circuits Factory where Fernando Jimenez Gonzalez was working overwhelmed Gonzalez, and he fell forward into a waste-high vat of sulfuric acid and drowned to death just before 1:45 a.m.

Gonzalez, a Redwood City resident, was one of two employees working Sunday morning at the factory at 1602 Tacoma Way.

Dowden said Gonzalez did not appear to be wearing facial protection, a safety measure strongly recommended when working in close contact with hazardous chemicals.

Dowden said the incident will be classified as an industrial accident -- "Everything indicates that at this point."

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials were investigating the incident to determine what working conditions surrounded Gonzalez's death, Dowden said.

The other worker at the factory was not injured, Dowden said.

  • Just try not working on Sunday when the boss demands it.  My husband lost three jobs that way, even though he stated when he took the jobs that he wouldn't work on Sunday.  It's the fault of the people for agreeing to work on Sunday in the first place and not refusing in the second place.  Factories would soon give up Sunday shifts if the people gave a hoot about the Lord's day.  Evil, evil, evil.

  • Actually, I would place more blame on the company -- I was looking at the issue philosophically, as in, "what exactly is accomplished by working on Sunday", etc.

Yes, if more people would refuse to work on Sunday then more companies would give up on the idea. It's become just another work day.

Notice that in the modern world we have the "weekend" instead of the sabbath or Lord's Day. The Catholics (and Protestants) have their Sunday, the Jєωs have Saturday, the Muslims have Friday -- but here we have 2 days of generic "non-work" time.
