Homeschooling - Recommended Reading List

  • Good evening:

Can any of you recommend reading lists for homeschool children (at kindergarten and 1st grade levels)?

Many children’s books today are laced with messages that are anti-Catholic and  anti-family.

I have found other homeschool reading lists based on a classical education, but they are from Prostestants, so they aren’t trustworthy sources.

Thank you in advance. God bless,

I create my own curriculum using different sources and this is one that give ideas for each grade level and subject. Highly recommend

  • Mcollier, I'm sorry you've had to wait so long for an answer.

Have you done a search on cathinfo, because there have been a number of homeschooling threads.

When we started homeschooling 30 years ago, there were few resources specilic to homeschoolers, and nothing specifically for Catholic homeschooling available to me at least. Nevertheless, they did very well and are all faithful Catholics, even though we used "protestant" resources, with the exception of history, which was offensive to little Catholic ears.

Of course we never used protestant for religion.

THe SSPX sisters (friends of my mother) sent me a big box of resources from their school. I also was lent reading books from some 7DAs and eventually found a secular HSing group a shared ideas.

At the age of your children thet should be concentrating on their letters and sounds and a good method is the so-called Spalding mthod. I am not up on what is available now. Ensure they develop a love of books. Most books we used were second hand, picking them up wherever we could, and steer away from modern which can be very ugly.

I developed my own curriculum, gathered from whatever i could find which was affordable.

  • Good morning:

My wife just sent me this link:

    https://goodbooksforcatholickids.com/2019/12/16/50-classic-books-that-middle-grade-girls-love/

I quickly scanned through the list. I am not familiar with these books, but I could tell right off the bat that a few of them should never be read by anyone. They are trash.

But my wife sometimes gets discouraged when she tries her best to find things she thinks will meet the standard, and then I zero into something that exposes the book for the poison that it really is.

There are many books that are written to appear like they contain traditional values, but are really poisonous propaganda in disguise. (The American Girl series is a good example of this--those books are pure trash, but many women may think they are acceptable to give to a young girl because they depict girls in traditional clothing.)

Since I don't have time to read through everything that comes back from the library or that we buy it gets very difficult to screen out the poisonous books. So I try to look for books printed before a certain date or that have a solid reputation among traditional Catholics. But I really do not know of that many. And my focus is work so it is tough to cover this base when my wife is working so hard to homeschool.

I definitely don't want to discourage her. But I do want to make sure I steer her in the right direction. So if any of you are familiar with the above list of books and can recommend any of them as good/safe, then I can get her to check those ones out of the library or buy those ones. And steer her away from the ones that are poison in disguise.

Also, as I have posted before...if anyone has books they recommend or a book list I am always on the lookout for them. And I appreciate all of the recommendations offered so far they have been very helpful to me and my family. My wife really has been doing an incredible job. I am very grateful for everything she has been doing. I am grateful for all of the advice we have gotten from this forum over the years.

    Thank you,

  • What are the ages and gender of your children?

I scanned over that list and would like to know, for my own benefit, which books you find to be trash?

  • Many of these books are unknown to. The only one I would decide against without further checking is Ten and Twenty. I feel sure it would be reinforcing the Jєωιѕн “victim” mentality.

My children of both sexes loved The Secret Garden, so the other Frances Hodgson Burnett novel A Little Princess is probably worth a try.

As a child I read Heidi and Heidi Grows Up, and enjoyed them.

I was recommended George MacDonald books by someone I trusted, but never read them.

One book which comes to mind, which is not on the link, is Hinds Feet on High Places.

There are some books on St Therese that would be good reading though I don’t know of the one listed.

Like OBrien I am curious to know which books you think are trash and what criteria you use to decide.

  • Little House on the Prarie series are good; I also have gotten the stories of the saints from Seton Homeschool.  For children, you could go to Abebooks and do searches for fairy-tales; there are some beautifully illustrated renditions out there.  My children--both boys and girls--enjoyed the "Cottage by Bantry Bay" series; the author's name escapes me now...but they are about a Catholic family in Ireland.  Very sweet and wholesome.  Also the "Eddy" books by...and her name escapes me now, too.  I think the author was the same as the "Betsy" books.

Also, St. Augustine Academy Press has many, many good books.  They take old Catholic Children's books and reprint them.  Many are from the 20's and 30's.  Their Magnifcat readers are very good. Selection of small children's books is small, but very good quality.  LOTS of boys books.

    Good evening Nadir:
As always thank you for the recommendations and advice.
The books I saw as problematic:
    - Drovers Road - about a girls adventures through college
    - Island of the Blue Dolphins (and about 8 other books) - that seemed to promote feminism
    - Twenty and Ten - Same reason you mention above
    - All-of-a-Kind Family - more Jєωιѕн propaganda
    - Number the Stars - h0Ɩ0cαųst propaganda
    - Bs for Betsy - about how great going to school is, which is not bad per se, except that it could be discouraging to a homeschooler and is probably full of nonsense given the times we live in.
My criteria are not the best. I am basically "judging a book by its cover" and using gut instincts to protect my children from all of the propaganda that is being published. Today children's books are almost as bad as television when it comes to propaganda.
Thank you again for the book recommendations these are very helpful to us and are greatly appreciated. God bless.
