Homeschool - Reading List Thread

  • Good morning:

My wife is homeschooling our children. This is year two. I am trying to help her find good books at the library that we can use (but many of these books are anti-Catholic or propaganda). So I try to focus the search on books published before 1950 (which isn't always a safe bet either). I was hoping CathInfo might have a thread on the site with a homeschool reading list that homeschoolers can refer to/add to. If there already is one, I would not want to recreate a new thread, but I could not find one in the search.

If not, maybe this can be the beginning of that thread. Right now I am looking for recommendations for good history books. The local library has a children's book about Christopher Columbus with the theme that he was "escaping the dark and fearful oppression of the past" or something like that. Total garbage!

Thank you for any help you may have! God bless

  • I do not know what age are your children, or if this relevant to your query, but there is the following excellent Home Schooling system as follows:
New Traditional Catholic homeschool available (grades 9 - 12)

We would like to introduce Angelic Doctor Academy, a Traditional Catholic homeschool with a solid high school curriculum (lower grades coming soon). We have collaborated in creating many new Traditional Catholic textbooks which are designed to lay out the concepts in an orderly way, while avoiding liberalism and modern errors. So much of the typical Catholic curricula out there use inferior and problematic materials.

We also offer something very unique - a grading system which grades all the coursework - including the weekly / daily exercises! Busy parents appreciate that, as well as our "at a glance" academic reports which keep them informed of their students' progress at all times.

We are currently offering a discount off our already low course fees, as well as referral bonuses. Please visit our website (still in construction in some spots) at https://www.ada.school or call 785-260-7999. Thank you!

Should it help, attached are some samples of a few of the new textbooks. Samples of more courses can be seen at https://ada.school/new-traditional-catholic-textbooks/

These attached samples are indicative of the spirit of all the new textbooks, although admittedly this is harder to see in, say, Latin or the mathematics courses.

  • Donkath:

Thank you. Our children are small, but this looks like a great option for us for the future.

This is a good Catholic book about Columbus, though it's in ebook format:

    The Life of Christopher Columbus
    by Rev. A. G. Knight, S.J., 1877

Link here. (I've also attached it below for extra measure).

This book goes through great lengths to correct the errors of Washington Irving's biography, and it also indirectly refutes the modern lies and distortions surrounding this great man. I think that it would be an excellent source to draw from when teaching your children about Columbus.

I would look out for old books at charity / 2nd hand shops. Get to know the staff so you can ask if they would look out for you for books that they might otherwise throw out because there is little demand for the like.

I am sure there must already be such threads.

  • The women's section sometimes has had discussions on homeschooling. In fact in one thread a homeschooling sub-section as a part of the women's section was suggested, and the thread https://www.cathinfo.com/women-only/homeschool-advice-needed/
was drawn to Matthew's attention. But I think that a section of this kind should been to both sexes as men play a crucial part in the education of their children.

  • There's a Catholic history curriculum called RC History. They have lots of books available on their site which they've deemed good for supporting their curriculum, so it's a good place to look for history books for all ages.

    www.rchistory.com

Also, bethlehembooks.com is always a good resource.

  • Not history books, but here is a list of books we use for those learning to read. (appx 1st/2nd grade)

    Early Readers (level 1)
The Adventures of Little Bear / Little Bear Treasury
Frog & Toad Treasury / Days with Frog & Toad
any Biscuit books (lots of them or there are a couple of Treasuries)
    Owl at Home
    Mouse Soup
    Grasshopper on the Road
    Mouse Tales
    Uncle Elephant

    Early Readers (level 2)
National Geographic Kids (sharks, volcanoes, trucks, polar bears, etc, etc)
Frances books (Bread & Jam for Frances, A Bargain for Frances, A Baby Sister for Frances, etc)
Amelia Bedelia (the older ones, not the new ones)
    McBroom's Wonderful One-Acre Farm
    Mercy Watson books
    The Bravest Dog: Balto
    Marley books
Fancy Nancy (the early ones are alright, but don't move into the chapter books)
    The Golly Sisters Go West

I'm pretty sure places like TAN books sell leveled readers that were originally written for Catholic schools, but I don't own any of those, so I don't know if they're worth the cost or not. Most of the books I've listed here we've collected from yard sales or are otherwise inexpensive.

Once they're ready for chapter books, I like the Imagination Station series.

These are some of the religious picture books (read-alouds) that we have.
    The Weight of a Mass
    Take it to the Queen
Treasure Box books (20 in all)
    Clown of God
The End of the Fiery Sword (two others in this series)
    St. Patrick by dePaola
    Brigid's Cloak
    Legend of the Poinsettia
    Manners in God's House
    The Legend of St. Christopher

Here's the Columbus book we have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/068413179X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=068413179X&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwchanco-20 />
I doubt it's in print, but you might find a copy somewhere.

I do. Thank you. I couldn't find it for some reason when I ran the search on the site.

Thank you. A good reading list is very valuable. We found some good books through Memoria Press as well (after weeding through ones we would not recommend). My wife doesn't always catch the things that I catch, so it helps to get some pre-vetted lists here because I usually don't have time to screen everything that comes in from the library and sadly there is too much garbage at the local public library. Plus now everything needs to be pre-ordered and picked up so she can't even screen it really before checking it out.
Incidentally, I just tracked down the Columbus Story at the library. All I was going off of though was that it was printed in the 1950's (so I was still not so sure about it). Happy to see it made the list.
