Homemade Laundry Detergents and TSP

    • We recently purchased a High Efficiency (HE) washer and dryer. Now that we have our HE washer, all of the laundry detergent I stocked up on is no good to me (which is okay, my mother-in-law is able to still use it), and I will be needing to use something else. I have the option of either (1) buying an HE specific pre-made detergent or making detergent myself. I decided to make it myself, as its seems to be a proven method to geting clean closeths, AND it costs a  lot less!

    For those of you who want a simple recipe, there is a very good one here.

    Unfortunately, and hopefully Parents for Truth or Mommyofmany can help me out here, there's no further instruction on adding TSP to the mix. Does anyone know how much to add?

    • I've been making my own soap for a several years now & I've never seen a recipe that uses TSP.

    My daughter got me started on it & she got the recipes from the Duggar family website under Favorite Family Recipes.  We made the one that uses hot water & makes 5 gals.  I thought this was rather a pain to make so I made the dry recipe after it was used up & have been hooked ever since.  1 Fels-Naptha soap bar grated(you can use Ivory, Sunlight or Zote but I think Fels-Naptha is the best),  1 cup Washing Soda & a half cup of Borax.  Mix well.  Use 1 tablespoon per load (2 if heavily soiled or large load.) Believe it or not your clothes come out really clean!  I pretreat any stains but the whites come out dazzling white.  You can add essential oil for fragrance but I don't.

    • I use this too but with the fels-naptha.

    Glad to see this revived.  I've been making my own as well, and I also follow your recipe.  Works great, cleanest clothes ever!
