How about feeding them?  Our Lord and his Apostle St. James seemed to think that was pretty important.

Forgive me but isn't your average person on welfare able to afford a game system or television these days? One has to be careful about the word "poor."

  • Not all the poor receive public assistance.

  • If you know you will be in a big city with visible people living on the street one thing you can do is keep some kind of shelf stable food on you like packs of peanut butter crackers. If you are driving and it's winter you can stop at a thrift store and pick up cheap blankets. Most have gorgeous handmade afghans - sometimes there is a flaw and sometimes they are perfect. If you had more to spend you could order those wool blend emergency blankets.

I would suggest feeding there souls is more important. That's the real idea behind feeding the poor.

I actually have to agree with this. Lord knows that with drugs, broken homes, thug activity, etc. the biggest ailment of our inner cities is the Word of God.

That is certainly true.  This is the same Word which tells us that telling the poor, "Good luck!  Keep warm and well-fed" without doing anything to help them does not impress God.

I know you know this, Trad Guy.  Your defense of Catholic social teaching on this forum has been eloquent and effective.  I just want to point out that there is no real dichotomy between feeding souls and feeding bodies.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

I don't know if that is true of the average person on public assistance, but it is true of some.  There are people who abuse the system.  That is wrong of course, and should be stopped when discovered.  The homeless family that comes into a shelter or a soup kitchen doesn't have a TV or game system anywhere, though,

There is perhaps a reason people don't stop their cars for Blacks and Hispanics and that is because they are 239 times more likely to carjack you if you do...

Well consider this, Blacks in America have been heading in soup kitchens and receiving welfare for over 40 years and still have failed to raise themselves up, and to add to that show so much ingratitude for it.

  • I have made a solemn vow to avoid any discussion of race on this forum, so I am not going to respond to this post.  I just did not want you to think I was ignoring you.  Thanks.

  • If I'm carjacked or attacked when giving someone cookies or a blanket I am. I can't in good conscience walk or drive by someone I believe to be hungry or cold if I have accessible food or a blanket to share.

  • Fill in the blanks.

    1.  Blacks and Hispanics are 239x more likely to carjack you than _______________ when  offered food or clothing.
       (A)  Asians        (B)  Caucasians       (C)  Trad. Catholics      (D)  Jєωs      (E)  Zombies

Come now!  From whence comes this statistic?  Why the assumption that alms are distributed from the cars of we benevolent tradcats?  It is NOT true that all the poor are on welfare and own TVs and electronic games.  There exist in big cities many invisible poor who are "off the radar."  Illegal immigrants with CHILDREN.  It's wrong to punish children for the sins of their parents.  The chronic mentally ill. There are many who are "released" to "community care" which means the streets to fend for themselves.  Regardless of their crimes, these are people with needs.  We have a duty to assist them.  God's duty is to protect us as He sees fit.  He does His part.  Sadly, we seldom do ours.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

Frances the topic was about feeding the visibly homeless. I wrote about keeping blankets and cookies in your car if you know you will be passing them. I agree with you  - just saying that was his response.

I don't think having a game system or TV means you aren't bad off.

I am sure many have TVs or game systems, most likely in storage.

A and B obviously. It comes from the FBI by the way.

Obviously we cannot be completely heartless which is why even illegal immigrants are given emergency care, but the point is America is not heartless since not only do we support these people, who have broken the law by the way, with welfare but we even allow them to become citizens even if they have broken the law. And don't worry the Catholic Church does support ands shelter these people, even if they have broken the law. Hell the largest supporter of those crossing the U.S.-Mexican border is the Catholic Church.

Oh and also don't forget the mentally ill and minorities will always be given the jobs under affirmative action.

I don't think so either, but I wanted to make the point that with the homeless there is really no possible doubt about poverty.

No.  I am pretty sure it is traditional Jєωιѕн zombies.  I am almost certain I saw that on CNN.  Or maybe Fox.
