As dissatisfaction with the U.S. public school system grows, apparently so has the appeal of homeschooling. Educational researchers, in fact, are expecting a surge in the number of students educated at home by their parents over the next ten years, as more parents reject public schools.

There's not a thing I could add to this discussion that would be more appropriate and God-honoring than this, which is so convicting to me as a homeschooling parent that I've included itppermanently in my CathInfo signature:
"Obviously the need of this Christian instruction is accentuated by the decline of our times and morals. It is even more demanded by the existence of those public schools, lacking all religion, where everything holy is ridiculed and scorned. There both teachers' lips and students' ears are inclined to godlessness. We are referring to those schools which are unjustly called neutral or lay. In reality, they are nothing more than the stronghold of the powers of darkness." - Pope St. Pius X, 'Editae Saepe'
Immaculate Heart of Mary, triumph soon!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

One concern is the growing number of public virtual schoolers.. it's like wild fire in states that allow it. The children are of course better off at home. I would rather see parents struggle some initially and then turn into confident homeschoolers, instead of seeing most homeschoolers dependent on the public school with the children in front of a state provided laptop all day with very few having the skill to homeschool.

If you want to home school on line, find your own program. Don't accept that with which the public school entices you for FREE. A former student of mine finished his sophomore year on line after needing a long recuperation period following back and knee surgery. CPS showed up accusing his parents of neglect because of the lack of elevator in their two story home! They were thereafter monitored throughout the summer to ensure Jason remained in two of three downstairs rooms. The school-supplied computer included a camera giving public access to Jason's bedroom and the upstairs of the house. Talk about an invasion of privacy!

That is truly scandalous. Now CPS can add peeping-tom and voyeurism to it's list of services. Parents need to be educated on their rights so this sort of thing does not happen.

Yours is by no means an isolated example, Frances. What a despicable snare that "free" computer is!
In another state a good soul at the public school advised me against using the online scam; she said people were being charged with truancy like crazy.
