  • The nun who ran the Novus Ordo parish I once went to used to fill the holy water fonts with sand during Lent.  She said it had something to do with the desert, but I never understood it.  The parish was a in a farming community and the people didn't like it and complained until she eventually stopped doing it.

In the Catholic Church, the holy water fonts are never emptied (though they may, through inattention, by dry on occasion).  Holy water is needed most during Lent.

  • No.  The CATHOLIC CHURCH doesn't empty the holy water fonts in a CATHOLIC CHURCH except to clean them and fill them right back up.

It is the Conciliar church that empties holy water fonts to teach some bizarre lesson that nobody really understands and doesn't lead souls to Almighty God.

  • Never take away a sacramental!  It is to keep the devil away!

New Order put sand in the holy water fonts and to get back people put cigarette butts in them!

If you are in the New Order, for heavens sake, for your soul, get out!  there is nothing there!

Yes. After Mass and the Stripping of the Altars, Fortescue says holy water should be removed from all fonts and put down the saquarium, in preparation for the blessing of the new water on Holy Saturday; though he says a small quantity should be kept for the blessing of the fire on Holy Saturday. You can check that in Forescue's Ceremonies Of The Roman Rite Described page 296 (1917 edition).

Emptying the fonts for the whole of Lent, or putting sand in them are Novus Ordo innovations.

  • Somewhat related, if you have a font with Holy Water at home, and it's nearly empty, can you add more water (unblessed) to it and retain its sacramental status?

This is what I remember from my pre VII altar server days (born in 1951).  Similarly the sanctuary lamp was extinguished after the Blessed Sacrament was carried to the Altar of Repose.  Candles were kept lit before it of course, but not the Sanctuary Lamp, which would be relighted from the Pascal Candle on Holy Saturday.

Correct. Though if the church is closed after midnight and the candles have to be put out it would be necessary to have a sanctuary lamp burning at the altar of repose until the Mass of the Presanctified. Fortescue also says "The holy oils should be burned (in the sanctuary lamp) and the new oil procured from the bishop as soon as possible on Maundy Thursday", which suggests a sanctuary lamp can burn at the altar of repose.
