  • Is there anyone here who is a hoarder and willing to admit it and discuss it?

    Do you pray about it?
Do you have a Saint who you ask for intercession?
Have you succeeded in parting with your items?
What do you believe led you to hoard?

I’m struggling with it and even more so because I’m due to make a move from SC back to Louisiana.

I used to be an extreme hoarder.  I saved every ticket, receipt, letter, or scrap piece of material I obtained. I constantly have to work on minimizing the items we possess.

My maternal grandparents lived through the great depression and taught my mother to "save everything" for possible future uses in order to save money and not risk running out of anything. I picked up on a bit of that and over the years have been working to keep things more simple and having only what we know is useful and will be used within a reasonable time.

One thing that originally helped me was I was accepted to a convent and had to get rid of my belongings.  Even though that was not God's will, it helped me realize how much you can live without.  I still have to be careful not to collect too much stuff, and I am constantly donating items to the thrift store that we are given by people and don't need.

If you want a patron Saint to pray to for help, pick any Saint who was poor and had little to live on.  Maybe Saint Martin de Porres, Saint Benedict of Labre, or Venerable Anna Maria Taigi?

There's me I guess. I was forced to part all my loved objects so many times due to moving and it breaks my heart to do it. I donated as many things as possible so at least I could tell myself someone else may find them useful. But it did come to many points I just had to throw things out myself which pains me.
As for what makes me hoard? I think it's for being very nostalgic and frugal. I don't think it's particularly a bad thing if you manage to organise things and have a steady place for them. But for me, somebody without a steady home, it's a bad idea. So now I just go as minimalist lifestyle as possible.

Another 2 strategies I used was to take photos of things I liked but needed to give up and keep an album. At least photos don't need much space. And I had my friend who is ruthless about throwing things over, and had my friend throw out all the things, as I sat there, looked away and sobbed.
