Hip hop music
« on: June 06, 2022, 06:26:25 PM »
So recently we have had a situation that has turned out life upside down.
With this has come a spiritual attack that I recognize yet have been in a spiritual sloth due to it and thus been unable to fight it.
Also this has caused my husband to go back to producing hip hop music (at least the instrumentals)
We learned about 5 years ago how ungodly that type of music and stopped listening to Christian pop music as well
Basically we only listen to Gregorian chant, classical, and folk music.
But now this. When I spoke with him he says that it is not contrary to the faith nor displeasing to God but he's not sure if he'll spend time in purgatory for it.
I know father ripperger has a sermon regarding this topic and I will search for it but is there anything anyone can refer to in regard to this topic. I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm so sorry to hear this and will pray for you and your husband.

One thing that is a true test for anyone willing to be really honest with themselves, is the question:

What thoughts and emotions does this music conjure in my spirit?

If honest, the answer is almost always:

sɛҳuąƖity
rebellion
vain thoughts and memories
entitlement
fitting in with the world (not being weird Catholic)
pride

It's personal for everyone, but music brings up memories.  What are those memories exactly?  They may be "good times" on the surface but bad times for one's soul.

Things are so stressful for everyone.  It's understandable that people want to find some way to relieve stress and relax a bit.

Is there another way to relax, relieve stress and provide for a creative outlet and distraction?

I think genres like lofi hip hop (that one meme YouTube channel) are entirely harmless and are without lyrics, if he is creating instrumental relaxation music like this I don't see the issue at all but if it is drill/trap or something he should reevaluate since I think these rhythms are used to incite violence and there is something demonic about it, especially the rappers who go on these tracks. I think drill/trap tries to channel masculine baseline impulsivity in our fallen natures, especially towards violence. You might need to be more specific here or post some of his beats.

Either way if this creative impulse is being channeled negatively he can definitely direct it positively.

He was a dj and music producer before we met but then believed God got him away from that for obvious reasons. However he has started to do it again to bring an income because he no longer wants to do roofing, however he has spoken to me about starting a carpentry business which I have tried to encourage, but he has decided to do a podcast( which I understand will need music) but  I don't know the ins ands outs because he won't discuss too much with me

Yeah the DJing thing gives me a better idea, that is definitely no good and producing that kind of music might introduce him into a dark life pattern. Making music for a podcast might be entirely different, my family will pray for yours :pray:.

Podcasting does have music production skills he can reuse (even if there is no music) so that is a potential good that plays to a skillset he already possesses. Have you sat down with him and asked where he thinks podcasting will lead him? I think that may be a different approach that may help him open up and help him process his decision making.
