  • Hi all,

    I am going to get married soon and don't know much about customs or smaller traditions. What are some traditional Catholic practices or things to incorporate in the wedding ceremony? Thanks

  • One beautiful catholic tradition is that when the Mass is ended the groom stays seated and the bride, assisted by the maid of honor, takes a small bouquet of flowers to the side altar of Our Lady and kneeling before her statue prays for her guidance to be a good wife and mother.  A soloist or choir sings Mother at your feet is kneeling while she does this

    .

    1.
    Mother at your feet is kneeling,
    One who loves you 'tis your child
    Who has sought so oft to see you.
    Bless me Mother, bless your child.
    Mother, when my Jesus calls me
    From this world so dark and drear;
    From the wily snares of Satan,
    Shield me Mother, Mother dear.

    Chorus
    Dearest Mother, tell my Jesus,
    How I love Him fond and true;
    And oh Mary, dearest Mother,
    Tell Him I belong to you.

    2.
    Plead for me when Jesus judges,
    Answer for me when He asks;
    How I spent so many moments
    How perform so many tasks.
    Mary, oh my dearest Mother
    May it e'er to me be giv'n;
    As on earth I fondly love Thee
    So, to love Thee still in Heav'n .
    "Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]

  • This is sung properly according to the sheet music.

  • I did this in 1973, when we married.  My mother told me that for some reason St. Joseph gets, hm, overlooked. So, maybe the husband can also take time at the altar of St. Joseph, if you have his altar in your church.

    We also both took a lit candle and lit one to show unity.  I do not know if this is Catholic or not.

    I like how the priest will join the couple/bless them when they are engaged and maybe 6 months before the marriage.  We never had that.  I am sure there is a name or phrase for this special blessing.

  • Your traditional catholic priest should be help you.
    Many of the priests are from other countries and not familiar with the cultural catholic traditions here.
    Also many of the priests were born post Val II and wouldn't know of the traditions that have been lost (like kissing the wedding ring): I'm sure they didn't study anything like it in seminary.
    I understood the OP to be referring to the whole wedding day, not just the Mass.

    "Ceremony" (term the OP used)
    does not equal
    "mass" (your term)
    does not equal
    "wedding day" (your term).

    So many on Cathinfo make so many presumptions simply because they don't read.

  • There is a Spanish custom of 13 coins, representing the dowry, good fortune, and Jesus and the apostles.

    In one form of the ceremony, after rings are exchanged, the bride gives them to the groom, then the groom gives them back.

    If you're interested, google "arras coins" for more info.
