  • Can anyone here point me in the direction of where to buy a quality mantilla?

The ones in the local Catholic Stores are cheap and stiff.

I am used to the ones I had as child when I attended the Mission in San Juan Capistrano. Lovely soft lace ones.

I bought fairly decent black lace at JoAnns and will make my own, but I miss the quality, well made ones of the past.

  • Mount St. Michael have them in their gift store.  Not sure if they qualify as to your taste, but we like them.
I think they are all a little stiff, till you wash them.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • Does anyone know why it is that women in Europe don't cover their head in Mass even in Traditional Chapels?

  • Europe is more liberal as compared to the United States, Australia, South American countries, etc.  I think that women in Europe are also "free" to wear pants/slacks to the Tridentine Mass; perhaps they feel too embarrassed dressing in traditional women's clothing.

It would be interesting to see what norms are observed in France, which has a very large SSPX presence of several hundred priests.

It's because those in charge of the SSPX are much more liberal than you think.

Someone once said Joseph II changed the practice of requiring women to cover their heads in Church in Austria - I'm not sure about that.

  • Who is Joseph II?  Pope Benedict XVI?  It is difficult to "justify" women not wearing veils, mantillas, head coverings, etc., at Mass when the 1917 Code of Canon Law explicitly requires this.  On another message board, one women told how it was "unthinkable" to ever go into a Catholic parish without a veil, whether one was going to Mass or not.  They would keep extra veils in the glove compartment of the car just in case they needed to go into a parish church.
