  • We've learned that we can no longer depend on the presence of a priest for Extreme Unction.  We now see how quickly the government or self imposed powers that be (health department) can deprive us of our end of life sacraments.
It is our responsibility to be prepared while we are still in good health and still have our faculties about us.  Holy Mother Church has given us the remedy should such misfortune befall us.

In most old prayer books and the Raccolta, you will find in the prayers after Communion the "Plenary indulgence in Articulo Mortis".   This indulgence will take affect only at the moment of death.   It reads:

" To all who, with sincere love towards God, after confession and communion made on any day they may choose, say the following prayer:
O Lord my God, I now at this moment, ceadlity and willingly accept at Thy hand whatever kind of death it may please Thee to send me, with al its pains, penalties, and sorrows.  Amen - Pius X March 9, 1904"

Offer that same communion as your Viaticuм should you be deprived of a priest

Then stay in a State of Grace so it will be effective should you need it.

"Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]

  • Thank you, Miseremini.

But I am puzzled by "ceadlity" and a search revealed nothing. Can you explain or is it a typo?

    But I did find this:

Raccolta - For a good death

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • It should read

O Lord my God, I now at this moment, readily and willingly accept at Thy hand whatever kind of death it may please Thee to send me, with all its pains, penalties, and sorrows.  Amen
    Pius X March 9, 1904

This was taken from the Blessed Sacrament Book by Fr. F.X. Lasance 1913...actually it's in most of his prayerbooks.

"Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]
