  • My 92 year-old grandpa told me that even in this Protestant country, ALL men wore hats in public until one day when President Kennedy showed up in public without a hat (I think it was at a Yankees game?).

After that, many men got the hint that hats were "passe."

Anyway, I seem to remember Fr. Gardiner (who was probably the smartest seminarian in Winona the year I was there in 2001/2002) as a deacon making the comment that all men ought to wear a hat of some kind.

    Funny what you remember...

But I do believe there is something to that, and I wish the SSPX would talk about that once in awhile.

A hat protects man's modesty in the same way (but to a lesser degree) as a veil does a woman's.

    So...

I will be going to a neat haberdashery and looking for hats on Saturday.

I like a gray Fedora, and the one John Wayne wore in the movie "The Quiet Man."

What do you guys think about hats making a comeback for men...for moral (not stylistic) reasons?

  • Absolutely love the idea! A hat is more than a frivolous fashion and is most becoming on any gentleman. There is dignity in a hat!.

Here is a nice article that discusses this:

If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • I've never found a brimmed hat that looked any good on me, in my opinion. But we shouldn't forget that women look nice in hats and shawls too.

  • I've worn a trilby consistently for nearly ten years now - and not just for special occasions.

"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • I remember watching this video about mens hats a month ago. He explains the different classic hats and how to wear them. Hats have function but also convey authority. Such as policeman or military would wear.

From what I gather, whatever fashion you do wear, make sure you're comfortable with the style and its compatible with your personality. Otherwise it'll be like wearing a costume.

  • After spending many years in the U.S. Army, I've found that I just feel uncomfortable out of door without a hat.

Of course, I am also very fair skinned and if I don't wear a hat, the top of my head gets sunburned, so I wear a hat for practical reasons.

I used to wear a baseball cap with my favorite U.S. Army division symbol (my first assignment--the 3rd Infantry Division, which was, at the time, guarding the Fulda Gap in Germany).  But I got very tired of people "thanking me for my service" after 9/11 and during all the wars since.  Frankly, I was in the army during a period that was mostly "peace time" (or what we have been accustomed to think of as "peace".

So, now I wear a non-descript hat that is not a baseball cap.  I wear a bowler when I wear my suit and tie.  I also have a top hat for very formal occasions, but I don't find that I have many occasions to wear it and I don't think it looks as good on me (plus, I can't wear it in the car).

  • I've been wearing hats for 25 years now. Used to be a baseball cap :detective: but eventually I graduated to a full brim. :drillsergeant: Typically I like the Panama hat style :farmer:, but in winter nothing beats a heavy wool cowboy hat  for keeping elements off of ya. Can you tell I work outside? :dwarf:  And in Wisconsin to boot.

I feel odd now if I am out of doors without my hat. Of course freezing cold and sunburn are issues when one has lost the more natural head covering . Hats are slowly catching on at the chapel we attend. :alcohol:

  • I would like to see  more men wearing hats. In most situations he would stand out, but in a good way, the way a modestly dressed woman does.
Mother of God, pray for us sinners.

  • It's very unlikely that hats for men will ever come back. Even in the last decade or so of their widespread use, they had no real practical purpose. It was generally for fashion and etiquette reasons that they were worn.
