  • I am not the most sure of what to think of Halloween as far as what we should do as Catholics concerning it as well as if it would be a sin to give out candy tonight or say "Happy Halloween!" Anyone have any advice?

  • Just keep the porch light off and go to the door with a shotgun if anyone comes knocking.  :good-shot:

  • Well, you see, my mother sort of wanted me to give out candy I think for some time I guess, but I said I did not want to give out candy. So I am unsure if I sinned or not.

EDIT: Of course, I don't think I said it in the best sort of tone maybe, but I'm not completely sure.

  • I'm sorry I got to this thread so late.  I imagine whatever I say will not be of much help by this point.  I struggled with this one too, although I for sure would not give out anything with sugar because we don't eat it.

I made a sign for our door that read:

    Sorry!
    We are not celebrating Halloween.
Tomorrow is a Holy Day for us.

Please do not ring the doorbell.

Thank you and God bless you!

I attached a beautiful picture I found through Google image search of all the Saints in Glory.

Unfortunately, most kids don't bother reading signs, so I ended up having to put a piece of masking tape with a big red circle and X-out over the doorbell...

If you don't want to be that extreme, you could hand out small bags of pretzels or raisins...

As far as it being sinful, I think it has a lot to do with intent...I remember someone saying to me once that if you feel as if you might have sinned, you probably did...

Thus saith the Lord to you: Fear ye not, and be not dismayed at this multitude: for the battle is not yours, but God's...It shall not be you that shall fight, but only stand with confidence, and you shall see the help of the Lord over you: ...fear ye n

  • I realise this is late, but you could always dress up as something holy and hand out rosaries with instruction manuals when people come knocking at the door.

  • They do not know blessed or not. They are desecrating symbols of the Blessed Virgin and that is all they know. And, besides the Cathechism teaches us to show respect for all pictures and symbols of our faith. Instead, give them the tootsie pop and pray for their souls that is what I did.
