Group says Rosary at alleged brothel in Limerick
    Friday, May 31, 2013
Members of a religious group in Limerick have begun saying a decade of the Rosary several nights a week outside a suspected brothel in the city to “pray for the women” in prostitution.

The group — which does not wish to be identified — is inviting members of the public to join them in prayer on Upper William St, outside a premises where members believe Romanian women are being forced to work as prostitutes.

The group, along with up to 30 business owners, met with gardaí last year but, after seeing prostitutes return to the streets, has decided prayer might be one answer to the problem.

“We’re praying for the girls. A lot of them are poor, from Eastern Europe and have come here expecting jobs and a better life,” said one man, who regularly prays outside the premises.

“We’re not against the women per se — they are somebody’s children.

“It’s also not good for business here. We’ll continue it because of the power of the Rosary and the power of the prayer.”

Women praying with him often approach the sex workers to give them holy medals, he said.

While he said he has not seen the women in recent days, he does not believe “our prayers have been answered yet”.

The Rosary will continue on unspecified week nights at about 5.30pm and at the weekend at 8pm, he said.

Following a number of high-profile arrests, gardaí in Limerick City say they are continuing efforts to tackle prostitution in the city.

Operation Freewheel, which took place in late 2011, saw nearly 30 men detained and charged with soliciting or importuning for the purposes of prostitution. The majority pleaded guilty to the offence, made a donation of €470 to a nominated charity, and had their charges struck out.

Gardai seek ASBOs to curb prostitution in Limerick

CIVIL orders are being sought by the state against eight Eastern European women alleged to be involved in the prostitution trade in Limerick city.

Six of the eight women appeared before Limerick District Court on Wednesday over alleged breaches of behaviour warnings issued to them regarding the alleged reason for their presence in the Catherine Street area of the city.

The eight women, most of whom are of Romanian origin, are Ekaterina Serghei, Laura Michaela Saolea, Christina Eremia, Nicoleta Vasile, Nadia Holea, Alexadra Mihai, Ana Maria Minteanu and Michaela Mihai.

They are all accused of being in breach of behaviour warnings issued by members of An Garda Siochana in Limerick where the women were requested not to loiter in the Catherine Street and Cecil Street areas of the city.

Anti-social behaviour orders are now being sought by the gardai which if successful could compel them to stay away from certain areas for up to two years.

At a preliminary hearing before Judge John O’Neill, solicitor Darrach McCarthy, representing two of the women, made an application for legal aid and a separate application for disclosure of docuмents to help in their defence.

Judge O’Neill indicated he would require a statement of means as he had “no information on what income they might be getting”.

Mr McCarthy said that given that there were “allegations of prostitution” in the background in the case, he would need more time to furnish statements of means to the court.

Judge O’Neill said the matter could not be dealt with until such details were finalised.

All eight women are due to appear the court again on September 26 for a plea or a date and Judge O’Neill also requested that a Romanian interpreter be made available to the court on that date.

  • Eastern European and Roma criminal gangs are quite active. Even during the day it is common to see Roma girls begging which is a front for prostitution.
