Good washing machine??

  • Can anyone recommend a good washing machine?  Nothing too fancy, top-loader, not High Efficiency.  My current one is a Whirlpool.  I have been looking up reviews online.  I find something that looks good then I see too many horrible reviews (ripping towels, leaking oil, flooding, breaking down right away, mold).  They all sound like junk.

    Thanks

  • My recent experience is that they're all junk, whether you pay for the fancy electronics (if those fail they cost as much to repair as buying a new one).  They're designed to fail after a certain amount of time so they can sell more.  My parents had a set that lasted 30 years, whereas my wife and I went through a pair roughly every 5 years.

My experience is that the Ropers were cheap and decent -- and yet they're basically the same thing as Maytag / Whrilpool , etc. and made on the same line.  But I can't seem to find those anymore ... probably got rid of them because they were undercutting the more expensive (yet nearly identical) equivalents.

I THINK Whirlpool / Maytag are still OK, but not what they used to be.  That Maytag Repairman is definitely hopping these days.

  • I found this that may be helpful ...

It rates the Whirlpool at the top, and historically those have been decent for me.  But, as I said, the Ropers used to be the same machine ... but 30% cheaper.

  • Amana washers are a good cheap option. I bought one a couple years ago for the old house and it did well.

  • Speed Queen, made in use steel tub.  All other makes, have plastic china made innards.  I had a whirlpool and I hears a most awful sound. I opened the lid and the agitator was completely broken, cracked.  Twilight zone!  I love my Speed Queen! You pay more but none of the plastic garbage!

  • I've heard good things about Speed Queen ... except that they're extremely expensive.

  • Could also double for bathing the kids. Very economical! Never breaks down. Lasts forever.

My old '91 Maytag quit a couple of months ago. Since I live alone I'm seriously thinking of going that route. I still have a good dryer.
