  • Since my conversion I have been unable to find any recreation that really refreshes me. I was hoping for some suggestions especially now in these cold months.

    Thanks, Anthony

  • What exactly do you mean by recreation? Studying the Catholic faith is a great way to refresh yourself in your free time, and we could point you to literally hundreds of sources. If you want some physical activity in the outdoors, there is no prohibition against hiking, walking, fishing, and playing certain sports--as long as it does not become an occasion of sin or hinder more important things. Do you have any pious companions you could get together with, or are you looking for something you can do by yourself?

Thank the Lord for your conversion--welcome to the fold.

  • I agree..

Chopping wood, carpentry, fishing. . .

Rosary making, studying spiritual topics and note taking. . .

Outdoor stations of the cross is refreshing -- and you could do it on skis.

If that's not rigorous enough, try cross country skiing, carrying an air rifle, and pausing every 1/4 mile to shoot at a target station without losing time to catch your breath, ought to do the trick.

On the other hand, if that's too much work, you could try bowling.

And yes, girls and women do it too.

(Sorry the resolution isn't better than this:)

Apparently they don't allow riflescopes -- just open air sights.
There is 4,000-year old tradition in this - I guess they started with archery.
But if so, why archery isn't still part of this is a good question.

    Start collecting baseball cards.

Or buy a couple of used baseball gloves on ebay and play catch.

  • Thank you for all the ideas. I have no Catholic friends locally. I was looking for something simple indoors. I've been avoiding shooting guns in spandex, so I'll have to pass on that ;)

Archery is good for indoors.  Helps with concentration.  Dress as you please.

Treadmills are pretty dull.  Ditto stationary bicycles.

Indoor lap pool is a thought, but it's pricey.

How about a rowing machine? That's a total body work-out, and you can prepare indoors for the real thing outdoors, come summer!

    There's always darts.

But be careful with the pizza / beer combo!!

This is billed as a dart game special pizza!  (But they don't say why.)
"The William's Special pizza is a combination of chicken, tuna, pineapple, Holland onions and mayonnaise."

Maybe dart enthusiasts order it a lot?

  • I'd suggest curling.

Great indoor and winter sport you can play all your life. You work in a small team of 4. It's refreshing, active and social.

Coincidentally, finding a curling club in the USA is similar to finding the TLM, not always around. People are kind and devoted to playing too.
