Title: Good male monasteries
Post by: Predestination on September 15, 2024, 01:04:51 AM
What are some good male monasteries in tradition? I have looked into the Dominicans of avrille but their schedule seems very lax when it comes to the divine office.

I don't know that there are any good traditional male monasteries. Every monastery or brotherhood I can think of has other duties, particularly supporting the priests. Unless a wealthy benefactor and good number of young men come together, that is unlikely to change.

But this surely should not stop simple things such as waking up at an early enough hour to be in line with how matins was always prayed in the past. Waking up at three or midnight does not hinder any duties and would be more penitential

Looking at their daily schedule, https://dominicansavrille.us/dominican-vocation (https://dominicansavrille.us/dominican-vocation), I'm uncertain as to how they would make it "less lax"?  The full traditional divine office with the pre Divino Afflatu structure (I've read that it can take up to three hours to recite it, much longer to chant in choir, which was a reason for Pope St. Pius X's reform of the breviary for parish priests in 1910), Lectio Divina, individual Low Masses recited by priests, the community's  Conventual Mass, the Angelus three times daily, the Rosary, times for individual private meditation and contemplative prayer.  This is all in addition to their operating schools, pastoral work, seminary studies for candidates for Holy Orders, and all the daily tasks required to maintain the operations of the monastery.

I was ready for a nap after reading it :-).

He's looking for a Jansenistic monstery, don't you know.

Seriously, though, he seems bent out of shape that they don't wake up in the middle of the night several times to do Matins.  With that kind of attitude, where these are "lax", he won't last a week at pretty much any monastery out there, since nothing will be "good enough" for his standards.

Scourging yourself 24/7 would also be "more penitential".  Come on, now.  Nor is your statement even accurate.  Depending on the individual, waking up several times a night could in fact disrupt sleep and then lead to various health and psychological issues due to sleep deprivation, and could most certainly interfere with one's duties, especially when one considers that the Dominican charism is more related to studies.

Waking up at three is what most traditional monasteries do but unfortunately they are all indult monasteries with dubious order or fellas loving sspx monasteries, these guys waking up so late is an oddity.

The Dominicans used to do far worse penances including sleeping on the floor with only your habit. I’m sure waking up an hour earlier will hurt nobody, there is one Carmelite monastery that gives its monks only 5.5 hours of separated sleep (but is Indult so has dubious orders) I’m sure going from 7.5 hours of sleep to 6.5 hours or even just 7 hours by reducing sleep by half an hour will hurt nobody especially with uninterrupted sleep.

Yes and no. We are all young once and there's nothing wrong with that. But with some experience you'll become less obsessed with externals and more concerned with whether the external practice is actually making you holier or if it's just making you prideful.

I just don’t want to lose my soul. It seems that exterior penances make a life of interior penance easier and I just don’t to become ensnared by pleasures and go to hell.

You should read The Spiritual Combat and a Treatise on Peace of Soul by Dom Lorenzo Scupoli. It addresses this very topic, and warns about trying to overdo it with devotions and physical mortifications. St Francis de Sales read from this book everyday.
