Does military history interest you? I mean real military history: close analysis of strategy and tactics, the battlefield terrain, the weather, and every other factor contributing to victory, defeat, or stalemate. Little or nothing in the way of propaganda—i.e., good-guy bad-guy crap.

If the answer is yes, there was a great British docuмentary series (not BBC this time) from the nineties called simply [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007VXZIG/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0007VXZIG&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwchanco-20 Its subject was largely but not exclusively the principal land and naval engagements in the European theater in World War II. There were somewhere between twelve and twenty programs all told. Each episode was two hours long, and most of them were impeccably and brilliantly narrated by Tim Pigott-Smith. The analysis of each engagement contained a detailed presentation of the order of battle, including such stuff as tank speed, armament, construction, etc. For planes, you were given, in addition to the stats I just mentioned, fuel capacity, ceiling, rate of climb, maneuverability—everything an inquiring mind would want to know.

Once again, alas, the UK edition is much, much cheaper. It is also far more complete (the evil mob at PBS mucked about with everything, of course). Still, if you're stuck with Region 1 NTSC, there's no use crying over spilt milk.

As to bump, in my head it means to 'bump' a thread up to the top by posting in it. It can also be used to call attention to someone else's thread, and perhaps a post that was unjustly ignored.

Hands down my favorite is Planet Earth, although outside the topics you mentioned it is a must see if only for the incredible photography.  Of course your audience has to be mature enough to look past the "old earth" belief that is held by the producers.

OK, try this for starters: Lord Kenneth Clark's unequaled and unsurpassed BBC series on Western art, Civilisation. It's now more than forty years old and widely hated because Lord Clark never tried to be cool, hip, or campy—think Simon Schama or Niall Ferguson.

If you were clever enough to get a region-free DVD machine, get the , which not only yields a better image but will also save you a double sawbuck.

You may have to check with Matthew to find out whether there's some way to go to Amazon UK whilst still earning CI a few click-through pennies.

By the way, what the d i c kens does "bump" actually mean? I've been seeing it for years, along with stuff like ROFL, LOL, and other initialisms whose sole function seems to be as a user's shortcut to avoid having to think. Online dictionaries are no help, since they tell me only that it's short for "bring up my post." Yet I get the impression it's mostly used by people who are giving a thumbs-up to someone else's remarks. But you seem just to be saying, "I call your attention to my last comment."

All "bump" means is someone made a post with the purpose of bringing that thread back to the top of the forum list where it will be noticed by other members, but they had nothing to say, so they're being honest.  They could go, "mememememe" or some other nonsense, but "Bump" is the TRUTH -- they're bumping the thread.



Just to get started, you can't beat BBC for just about everything in docuмentaries.  They send a guy out to the scene and he does a very informative tour, whatever the topic.  

You might have to sift the material a little bit for bias, but there isn't a lot of it, like you'll find on the History Channel or other American productions.  BBC is great.

Also 180 Degrees South is a great film about a surfer who sails to Chile to climb a mountain in the Patagonia region.  Fantastic film.
