As going to prison was mentioned on another thread, I thought it an interesting topic. I haven't been imprisoned though have visited prisons and been in a cell. When I was about 16, our school visited a prison as part of religion class. I remember being in a cell of a 27 year old man, who was ten years in prison at that stage. He let us step inside 'his world'.
My only other experiences have been visiting former gaols. One cell I was in was a replica of where Irish republican women were held. There was three women to a cell.
For the Catholic, prison or going to prison is a reality. With this abortion legislation in Ireland, there is a strong possibility of some having to go to prison or arrest will be more widespread.

Probably another discussion in itself but the Irish republican women prisoners were very disciplined and the rosary was recited every evening by their Officer Commanding. Why 16/17/18 year old girls were interned is another discussion?

Prisons are terrible.
My cousin was in one for 10 years. He compared it to Hell on earth. He made the mistake of being in the wrong company during a difficult time and paid for it with his sanity. He will never been the same.

That is so sad Napoli. It just takes being in a car with someone with drugs on them.

Prison isn't meant to be pleasant. Compared with Hell, the worst prison on earth is bliss. I've a relative who is mentally ill and homeless. He runs away from treatment, lives on the streets, stops his meds, turns to booze and street drugs, gets arrested, goes to jail, gets paroled to rehab, runs away...The vicious cycle has gone on since he was first arrested at age 12. The amazing thing is that he is now 48 and still alive. I'm of the opinion the only sort of setting that might stabilize him is gone in the name of "rights" for the mentally ill- commitment to a residential hospital.

There is a difference between not being bliss and subject to ongoing gang rape and other forms of violence. The US prisons do not adequately protect their prisoners. Many prisoners commit ѕυιcιdє because death is their only escape.

Obviously, it is wrong for anyone to be unjustly imprisoned. The punishment should come from loss of freedom to govern one's location and activities, not from one's fellow inmates who have merely transferred their crimes from outside to the cell-block. In such cases, the prisoners are in charge instead of the jailers. If you run a prison, you have to be tougher than the toughest prisoner. My point, though, is that incarcerating the mentally ill is yet another form of abuse. Keep in mind that comparatively, U.S. prisoners have it good. I've another relative who fell in with the wrong crowd and spent a week in a Colombian jail. Many don't live to suffer the effects of abuse. He was very fortunate to have the right connections and good money. :ape: :dwarf: :boxer: :light-saber:

Punishing someone for a crime by imprisoning them is fine in theory.But, aallowing the activities which go on in our prisons is inhumane.
