    • Immediately before Sunday High Mass, the priest wearing a cope, intones THE ASPERGE. He then sprinkles the altar, the clergy and the people with holy water.

    THOU SHALT SPRINKLE ME, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed. Thou shalt wash me, and I shall become whiter than snow.  (PSALM 50: 9,10)

    (Hyssop has a long history of use in foods and remedies. Ezov, the hyssop of the Bible, was historically used in ritual cleansing of lepers)

    Holy water is a sacramental, the devout use of which is able to remit venial sins. Let us upon entering the church bless ourselves with holy water from the font.

    I was not aware blessing oneself with holy water going into mass remitted venial sin. Now that I know I will never again walk into a church without blessing myself with holy water. Are there any others who did not know this?.

    • That's why it's good to have a Holy water font in your home- you cleanse and protect your soul upon leaving and upon entering you avoid allowing the outside evil to follow you home.
