  • A friend of mine has four boys and a girl.  The father is an avid hunter.  When each of the two older boys turned 13, their father taught them to hunt.  The daughter has now turned 13, and also wants to learn (the other boys are younger).  Do you think is appropriate to teach or encourage a young girl to hunt?

  • I do.  And not just to hunt but to handle a firearm for the purpose of self defense and the defense of others.  Hopefully she will never have to do any of them but knowledge of a skill is never wasted.

  • No, it is inappropriate for a girl to be taught how to operate a deadly weapon for the purpose stalking and killing wild animals to provide meat for the family. Such things are obviously outside of woman's realm. She wants to be like her brothers and if he's wise the father will draw the line.

  • I wonder what is driving the girl to want to hunt in the first place. Perhaps she doesn't have a mother to teach her appropriate female activities.  If a girl wants to do boys activities,  then there is something wrong.

A girl should be proud of her womanhood and engage in feminine activities. A happy girl with a high self esteem and self respect should not be having a desire to do boy things.

I don't think I would be encouraging my daughters to hunt.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

Actually men make the best tailors and are better at designing clothing.
The idea that sewing is tied to a gender is quite strange to me.

Also, men are better at cooking.  They make better chefs.

  • I don't see anything wrong with it, the decision should be left up to the father. I trust he knows what is best for his family and it is not my business otherwise. A lady I know who is able to hunt, killed a rattlesnake, safely, while her husband was away because she is a good shot.

These are uncertain times and everyone should have as many survival skills as they can learn. The deer you might need for food isn't going to wait around in a vulnerable position until a man is home to shoot it.

Buy her a sewing machine, a gun, and a game cookbook.

  • Mabel is correct that the father should know what is best for the daughter.  However, if she wants to learn to hunt, she should be taught.  Personally, I see no fundamental problem.

Look at my new hunting hat!  Hunting isn't my one of my favorite's, but I'm glad I can handle a gun.  Nowadays a woman often doesn't have a father, husband, son or brother around for protection.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • I know how to hunt and fish and repair severed arteries and natural antivirals and how to purify water and how to change the oil in my car and replace brake pads, make gun powder and fix the plumbing. I also know how to weave cloth, make taffy, embroider, and grow flowers. It's a matter of being well-rounded and capable. What man wants a wife who is nothing but dead weight? She should be capable and able to do what needs done in diverse circuмstances.
I would highlight the "boyish" things the described lady below does, but then I'd have to highlight the entire quoted text.

[10] Who shall find a valiant woman? far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her.

[11] The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils.[12] She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. [13] She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands. [14] She is like the merchant' s ship, she bringeth her bread from afar. [15] And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens.

[16] She hath considered a field, and bought it: with the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard. [17] She hath girded her loins with strength, and hath strengthened her arm. [18] She hath tasted and seen that her traffic is good: her lamp shall not be put out in the night. [19] She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle. [20] She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor.

[21] She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow: for all her domestics are clothed with double garments. [22] She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry: fine linen, and purple is her covering. [23] Her husband is honourable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land. [24] She made fine linen, and sold it, and delivered a girdle to the Chanaanite. [25] Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day.

[24] The Chanaanite: The merchant, for Chanaanite, in Hebrew, signifies a merchant.

[26] She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue. [27] She hath looked well to the paths of her house, and hath not eaten her bread idle. [28] Her children rose up, and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her. [29] Many daughters have gathered together riches: thou hast surpassed them all. [30] Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

[31] Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.

How many things on this list would we consider "man's work?" Our vision of a woman's place should be formed neither by obnoxious feminists, nor our ardent desire to totally avoid all things feminist.

  • One thing is for a woman to learn how to use a weapon for self protection in case of absolute necessity and another is the pursue of a traditionally male activity for entertaining purposes which I think is what the OP was referring to. The topic is getting mixed up or maybe I misunderstood the question.

For the slower ones among us, could you highlight where it says she wields deadly weapons and slays wild beasts?

  • Many of us are influenced by Hollywood too much when it comes to women defending themselves. There is always a petite woman out running and shooting the bad guy, real life isn't like that. Talk to Vietnam sergeants how many soldiers couldn't shoot a rifle properly but supposedly a woman alone with three children under 5 is going to kill a gang of bad guys after a yearly 2 hour training session. Men have incredible strength compared to women too and if she is menstruating, with child, or nursing she is going to be even more weaker.
