A secondary school student near Paris was accused of wearing provocative clothing and sent back home. The school thought her skirt was too long, and conveyed religious values.

Who would have ever thought it.....


"Other students come dressed up as hippies or goths and nobody says anything," the girl, Khadija, told the French daily Le Parisien, "but I’m not even allowed to wear a gypsy skirt."

"If I had come to school wearing a veil I would have understood their reaction," says Khadija, who is a student at the Edmond-Rostand secondary school at Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône near Paris.

On Monday, Khadija was sent home from school for wearing a long skirt that according to the school conveyed religious values.

"It was a beautiful day, I wore a long skirt," says Khadija, "the headmistress told me I was being provocative and sent me home."

Because teenage schoolgirls are always going to school with shotguns hidden under their long skirts. When they're not in a good mood, they might just pull it out and blow someone's head off.

The girl is a Muslim. That's evident by her name, and if you click on the link you will read that she takes her veil off before entering the school.

I'm sure the reason she wore her skirt has absolutely nothing to do with modesty, and everything to do with making a statement about her faith with her clothing, hence the use of the term "provocative" by the school authorities.

I don't quite follow the logic.  I own about three gypsy skirts and they are in no way provocative.  Well they're not if you wear a slip under the skirt like you're supposed to.  

The article isn't about modesty, and the skirt length being provocative in the sɛҳuąƖ sense. The school felt it was "provocative" in that it was worn to provoke a response or reaction, in this case of a religious sense, i.e. a statement of her Muslim faith.

FYI let me explain something that's happening in Los Angeles, CA

A few years ago, when I encouraged my daughter to wear long skirts to school,
she tried to follow my advice, but she discovered something surprising.

She was misunderstood by everyone, other students and the faculty and
administration. They all presumed she was trying to draw attention to herself.

She said that other students who wear long skirts do so to be "different,"
and by being non-conformist, they become the center of attention.

When she tried to explain that her purpose was to dress modestly,
nobody believed her. They accused her of lying. They said that
her lies are all part of the intention to become noticed and "vain."

It was quite challenging for me to understand this at the time,
for it made no sense to me, so I went to the school and asked some
questions. I was alarmed to find that no one I spoke to seemed
to have any common sense. I felt like I was from a different planet.

When she related this issue to our traditional priests, they did
not give her much help, because they stuck to their message that
Catholic girls should wear long skirts anyway. It was this state of
being all alone in a crowd of thousands of people who passed
judgment on her every day, that gradually made her think that
this is something she can't discuss with her confessor. It seems to
me this set a precedent, which later grew into other areas,
for if one thing is useless to get advice on, then other things are also
useless to bring up. And so it goes...

Women are dressed so poorly nowadays, that I find it very "attractive" when I see a modestly or properly dressed woman. The naked bikini thing doesn't do it for me anymore as it is everywhere. It is no longer alluring. What I am writing sounds crazy, but a well dressed Catholic woman objectively "looks" attractive to right ordered men.

Incredibly true. I go to a large state university, and most of the girls here.....narsty. It's like they're in a competition to see who can dress the least without getting arrested for public exposure. In fact it is a "tradition" for girls at this particular university at Halloween to dress in "costumes" that reveal as much as possible and go bar-hopping without getting arrested for public exposure.

But occasionally, when I do see a girl dressed well, or even professionally, it is far more attractive than the tanktop and short shorts that the others are wearing. Even if a girl is not objectively speaking very attractive, dressing well says so much about her character and self-respect that it more than makes up for the fact that she is not showing herself off.
