How to gain indulgences for Souls in Purgatory?
We should offer prayers and good works for all the faithful departed, but particularly for our parents, relations, friends, and benefactors; for those who are most acceptable to God; for those who have suffered the longest, or who has the longest yet to suffer; for those who are most painfully tormented; for those who are the most forsaken; for those who are the nearest redemption; for those who are suffering on our account; for those who hope in our prayers; for those who during life have injured us, or been injured by us; and for our spiritual brethren.
How to obtain a plenary indulgence for the Holy Souls
From November 1-8: visit a cemetery and pray for the poor souls.
On November 2: visit a church or an oratory and recite one Our Father and one Creed.
A partial indulgence can be obtained any time by visiting a cemetery and praying for the poor souls.
The following prayer is especially recommended: Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Six general rules for obtaining a plenary indulgence:
Indulgenced act: a special good work with special conditions of place and time.
State of grace at least when performing the indulgenced act.
Complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.
Confession (20 days before or after the indulgenced act).
Communion (20 days before or after the indulgenced act), but one Communion per indulgence
Prayers for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff
NB: The intentions of the Supreme Pontiff are:
The exaltation of the Church
The propagation of the Faith
The extirpation of heresy
The conversion of sinners
Concord between Christian princes
The further welfare of the Christian people
I remember as boys in the 40s and 50s cycling from church to church getting souls out of Purgatory. Indeed I visited three churches on All Souls day and all three were empty bar one or two people. I think very few souls are getting early releases these days.
Anyway, let us all get more out of Purgatory in the next few days.
Oh, by the way, I asked a priest if one can chose who gets out or it it up to God to decide. He said we can name a dead soul and God will grant them their release.
