  • Fasting and refusing to spend on unnecessary products is something that takes discipline, but the more one is inclined towards good habits the easier it will be to keep that discipline. In time the physical benefits of fasting and discipline will manifest in the body, there will be a healthier appearance, less fat, more energy, a more adept mind. Most of all will be the noticeable increase in piety, and it will become normal habit to pray often.

I want to go and live frugal to save money, but also to get my discipline back.
Anyone who wants to live frugal should start tomorrow, then we can do it at the same time, for tomorrow is my deadline for beginning.

I have put this off for one excuse or another for some time now, but I remember when I used to be nothing but discipline, and I want to return to my former state, lest I continue to deteriorate. I was not born to be a sloth, neither were you. You must take this opportunity to discipline yourself because heaven demands pure living from us in order to save us.

I think step one should be to eat nothing but porridge, and something small for protein. Think of the money you could save! Myself, I must overcome the urge to buy electric cigarettes, and it is an urge, but I must overcome it!
btw here is a rolling head for some reason:

  • I'm very blessed to be married to a Filipina, for although we have four children (and one on the way), rice is a staple of our diets. It's cheap, easy to prepare, and filling.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

Fr. Pfeiffer slimmed down when he ate a rice-based diet in India!
The Irish were healthy when potatoes were available in abundance.

Being frugal is more than diet.  There is great freedom in not having material wealth.  No worries about securing your fortune, about your retirement, and if someone steals your identity, he gets what he deserves!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

I heartily agree. I have a friend staying with me this weekend, and today she mentioned that she noticed that I never lock my doors. "Why?" She said. And I responded with another question, "Have you seen anything within these walls worth stealing?" "Well, no, I guess not" was her answer. I don't own anything that would tempt a burglar, and I must say, I don't care to change that.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

  • Jen, I used to say the same thing - I have nothing worth stealing here & if anyone wanted or needed anything they'd be more than welcome to it. Most of the time my doors were unlocked & windows wide open & I went blithely on my merry way.

Now I do try to lock the doors at nite & close the windows tight as there is something more precious that some of these creeps are after - no matter what age you are.  Rape is getting worse & almost more prevalent than theft.  So please at least lock everything up at nite.

  • I DO lock my doors!  Triple bolted, safety chained, peephole in a solid wooden door.  Windows are barred and locked, too.  I have nothing of value materially, but my virtue is worthy of protection.  I lock my office not because I own the computer, furniture, etc., but because it is good stewardship to do so.  Being frugal does not mean being careless or neglectful.  A lot depends upon where you live.  In NYC, you secure your possessions and your person.  I lived for a time in a small town where nobody locked their houses, keys were left in ignitions, and nobody gave it a second thought.

  • Today I bought rice and porridge. I ate no biscuits which I usually eat and ate much smaller quantities. This will help me to lose weight and do penance, for if you people remember before, I said that there was a history of heart problems in my family. What a shame it would be if I were to fail epically without having a habit of doing penance.

I must continue down this path.
and enter at the narrow gate.

Good luck to you.  Something that may help you in your quest is to not tell anyone about it.

    Quote from: St. Matthew 6:16-18
And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.  But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee.

  • Bowl of porridge 8am, bowl of rice 5pm. Thus is my fast thus far. I thought I would be hungrier than this but not hungry at all.

    Again:

There is no need for anyone on this board, or indeed anyone in this world (with the exception, perhaps, of a spiritual director), to know that you are fasting.
