  • Please take this short survey on friendship and adultery, and see the results.

The questions come from Lampe 1985, who interestingly argues that the lack of a social category for "opposite-sex friendship with a married person" (because it's often seen as adulterous) might "actually be causally related to at least some adultery". Lampe also says:
    Quote
There have been historical instances when close friendships, both same-sex and cross-sex, have been discouraged for fear they could develop into sɛҳuąƖ relationships. Such instances, however, are reflective of Jansenism (heresy) and are contrary to the original and earlier tradition.

  • Nah, I don't consider the discouragement of cross-gender "friendships" as inappropriate to be "Jansenistic."  There's simply a natural attraction there that could easily slide over into being inappropriate.  It's an occasion of sin.  Whether or not such relationship become "sɛҳuąƖ," there are various feeling that could easily arise that are inappropriate.

  • Yes. Affairs often start out emotional only -- especially for the woman. Think about it: women naturally crave attention. When a man is giving them copious amounts of attention, care, kindness -- that's as alluring for a woman as a scantily clad woman is to a man. Men and women are different. They operate differently.

And co-workers are forced to spend 8 hours every day together. How can a woman's husband compete with that? He has to work a job -- somewhere outside the home, where his wife is not. But that woman's "work husband" (modern term) or close male friend at work, gives her up to 8 hours of attention a day.

As a wise man once said, "if it weren't for the fact that men & women can successfully produce offspring together, a strong case could be made that men and women are 2 different species."

"Men and women are basically equal" indeed! Far from it.

  • An old examination of conscience asks something to the effect  "Have I spent time alone with someone of the opposite sex unnecessarily?"

That should indicate the Church's view of the situation.

  • If I were to translate the oxymoronic, socialistic CÖVÌD mantra (“together apart”) to gender/marriage, the result might be ...“equally different” or “uniquely alike”.    What a world we live in.

  • But back to the point --

The fact is that men and women have just ONE PURPOSE together, at least by nature, implanted into each one of them. God designed a natural attraction between the sexes, and you can ignore that natural attraction at your peril.

    It's playing with fire.

Funny it's called "gender theory" when really it should be called "species theory". The word "gender" derives from genus. Human is the genus; male and female are its species.
Listen to Fr. Trauner's sermon on "male and female He created them". @7:10: "Other cultures (non-Christian) segregate men and women, even in undue ways. The Church does not at the fundamental level."
