  • I have been drinking a beef bone broth in a powder form that is mixed with hot water, like you would drink a hot tea, etc. Would this be off limits on Fridays?

  • I think so. Aside from being thinner, whats the difference between that broth and beef gravy? There's this lobster bisque at the store that I like, but we can't have it on Fridays because it's made with Chicken broth.

  • My understanding is that anything made from meat, that retains the taste and flavor of meat, is considered "meat" and does not fulfill Friday abstinence.  Beef broth would certainly fall into that category.

Southern cooking being what it is, some foods (such as turnip greens or green beans) may be flavored with bacon grease or something similar, and I am not able to detect any meat flavor in them, so I will have those with no reservations.  Some people might be able to taste the bacon flavor, but I cannot, it just adds body to the dish.

And there are some foods, such as Gravy Master concentrate or Marmite (you either love it or you hate it, I love it myself), that have a kind of meat-like taste, but they do not contain any meat.  In that they are not derived from meat, I likewise have these with no reservation.

The only difference I can think of would be that most beef gravies tend to have some small bits of meat in them whereas this broth is strictly powder, but I see your point. Thanks!

I know that lard is allowed on Fridays and gellatin too I think?  So, I would guess that bone broth would be allowed if there was no meat.  But...  I couldn't say for sure.  Maybe ask your priest?

  • The Law of Abstinence forbids the consumption of meat and its juices (e.g., soup, etc.).

This is the opening sentence on the Church Law regarding Abstinence and Fast, found on page 1840 of The New Roman Missal by Father Lasance (pre-1955 missal).

I believe this should answer your question and help you to avoid broth just one day a week.

Broths made from flesh meat are not allowed, even if they do not contain bits of actual meat.  Lard, bacon drippings, and other animal products used either as oil for cooking or for seasoning are allowed.

Gelatin does not have the quality of meat and is also allowed.

This was what I thought but I couldn't remember the source.  ^^^
