  • Two former French prime ministers made appeals to Catholic voters, each claiming to represent the thinking of Pope Francis, is a debate between candidates for the leadership of the Republican Party.

Two movements organized by lay Catholics in defense of marriage, Manif Pour Tous and Sens Commun, have supported Francois Fillon’s candidacy. But Fillon’s rival, Alain Juppé, argued that he has a better claim to Catholic support. “I’m the most open to modernism and I fell closer to the Pope than Sens Commun or Manif Pour Tous,” Juppé said.

Fillon disagreed. “On most issues on which Alain Juppé seems to want to contest me,” he argued, “Pope Francis says the same thing as me.”

The winner of the Republican Party endorsement will face nationalist leader Marine Le Pen in a spring 2017 contest for the presidency.

  • Sarkozy is out, which means people's ideas that populism is rising and liberal politics are out are correct. I can't see Merkel winning next year in Germany either.

This likely spells the end of the influx of Syrians in Europe. The left has been too tolerant.
Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary...

  • Archbishop Georges Pontier of Marseille, the president of the Bishops’ Conference of France, has criticized President François Hollande for his support of a bill that would criminalize websites that “exert psychological or moral pressure to dissuade from recourse to abortion.”

In a letter to Hollande, the prelate pointed out that women who have had an abortion and regretted their decision would no longer be able to express their misgivings.

“This bill calls into question the foundations of our freedoms and most particularly the freedom of expression,” Archbishop Pontier added. “This seems to me to be a very serious attack on the principles of democracy.”

On December 1, the Vatican newspaper published a front-page essay supporting Archbishop Pontier’s letter.
