Love’s Only Source Who is the “love” of your life? Whoever is most important to you is the “love” of your life. Who is it that brings a smile to your face when you meet him or her? Love is one of our four basic emotions that enable us to bond with others. Every human being, from conception to natural death, needs to bond with someone in a loving relationship. It’s in bonding wherein we discover our true identity and experience intimacy. Without having a clear identity ourselves, we cannot have a stable relationship with anyone. We need intimacy, which is the deep sharing of ourselves with others, to mature spiritually, emotionally, socially, and psychologically. In the process of sharing ourselves with another, we discover all that we are. When we let someone into our life we go inside with the person and then we discover what’s in our heart and soul. Self-knowledge gives us power over ourselves to nurture or eliminate in ourselves what makes us immature. Both identity and intimacy are essential ingredients in the task of developing ourselves as human beings and can be fulfilled through love. Love is all about being a caring person.
Preparing His Apostles to continue His mission as the leaders of His Church, Jesus spoke about the importance of loving Him as their first priority. He informed them that, “Whoever loves father or mother, son or daughter, more than me is not worthy of me. The person who does not take up his cross and come after me is not worthy of me. The man who seeks only himself brings himself to ruin, whereas the one who brings himself to naught for me discovers who he is. The man who welcomes you welcomes me, and the one who welcomes me welcomes Him who sent me” (Mt.10:37-42).
What’s Jesus revealing here? He is saying that loving Him first is the foundation for the success of their ministry. Loving Him is their motivation and the source of their commitment and courage. Loving Him opens them up to the Father’s supernatural love which empowers them to love supernaturally. Natural love isn’t enough to keep people committed and encouraged in their relationships. We need supernatural love to perfect our natural love. God is the only source of supernatural love, which is a divine virtue directly infused into the believer. Putting someone or something else before Jesus deprives us of the source of divine love. Jesus clearly teaches that we mustn’t love any human being more than we love Him. Why does He say that?
Jesus wants to make sure that we don’t become wrapped up in something that leaves us disappointed. Have you ever been disappointed in love? The two greatest dangers in human relationships are that, first, we can easily fall into the trap of expecting the one we love to give us what only God can provide. Thus we create a false god. False gods can’t deliver. Secondly, love on a human level can easily become possessive and actually kill the relationship. Making another human being the center of your life creates the false expectation that human love will fulfill us. God didn’t create us for one another; rather He created us for Himself. Because human love is limited we can’t satisfy each other’s need for consistent love. Since God is the only source of love, not us, He is the source to which we must be connected if we are to love consistently. God never stops loving us.
If we invest all of our love in a man, or woman, we unconsciously expect that person to provide us with what only God can give us, such as meaning, purpose, security, power, hope, etc. We make him or her essential to our well-being. We frame someone as our idol and thus practice idolatry. We create an unhealthy relationship. When we view a man or woman as the source of our happiness we doom ourselves to misery. As flawed and sinful human beings we cannot fulfill either our own or another’s deepest yearnings for fulfillment and perfection.
Would you put your money in a bank that couldn’t assure you an increase on your deposit? There would be no point in depositing it, would there? The same is true with investing our love. If we want our love to grow, we must invest it in someone who can multiply and enlarge it. No human being can do this for us. Only God, who is greater than us, can supply us with the love we need to love Him, ourselves, and one another. We must let God love us first before we can love anyone, and that requires that we put Him first in our life.
I believe that one reason so many marriages disintegrate is precisely because people promise to love one another unconditionally without realizing that only God can enable them to fulfill that promise. Without God all they have is human love which is conditional love and can’t cope with hurt or betrayal. When the conditions aren’t met the love dies, disappointment kicks in and so the marriage ends because they couldn’t satisfy the expectations. Unconditional or supernatural love comes directly from God to those who put Him first. Too many husbands and wives expect their partner to fulfill their needs. Then they feel cheated and look for another “god” or “goddess” to “love” them.
Jesus is teaching us to recognize the temptation to invest our love in something that will ultimately fail us. We can have only one first priority in our life. We cannot give equal time to everything. In the sphere of love there can be only one most important object of that love in our lives, namely the One who gave us life, God Himself. To put God first in our life we must love Jesus who is present in His Church where He shares God’s love for us through her Sacraments. Loving Jesus means keeping His Commandments, which means being in Communion with Him, Acknowledging Him, Affirming His presence, showing Him our Affection, Respect and Reverence, Invoking His grace, Nurturing our relationship with Him, and giving ourselves Generously to Him. This love empowers us to love ourselves and others much more than we could ever do on our own. The more we put Jesus first in our lives the more we become truly caring towards others in our life.
Reason says that to grow in our love we must invest it in someone who can enable it to mature. Since Jesus is also God, it makes sense that we would love Him more than anyone since He enlarges our love. God is the Author of love. He is eternal love. When we make Christ the center of our lives by taking up His cross and put ourselves under His leadership as members of His Church, we discover our true selves and the greatness of our potential to practice charity which we express in valuing God and one another.
Jesus raises our consciousness to help us realize that while God created us out of love, for love, and to love, we cannot love without Him. The word “love” has been separated from God and become so trivialized and bandied about ignorantly that it has almost lost its meaning. Love and lust have become synonymous. Real love is giving without counting the cost as Jesus exhibited on the Cross. If what people call ‘love’ is not of God it certainly isn’t love but a cover for selfishness. All real love is from God. He is the Initiator of love. Therefore, we must resist the temptation to think we can truly bond with one another in a supernaturally loving relationship without God’s love enveloping our soul. God’s love is the fuel that makes up for the deficiencies of our natural love and 'supernaturalizes' it. First things must always be first. When God is first there’s order in our life. When we put ourselves or others first, our life becomes disordered, unbalanced, and falls apart. God, who is Love, existed before you and I existed, therefore when it comes to love and the ability to love, reason tells us that we must rely on the Expert, God, rather than on the apprentice, you and me.
