A new study from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health finds that kids and teens who are raised with religious or spiritual practices tend to have better health and mental health as they age. And sadly, Thomas Merton encouraged the practice of Eastern meditation. I listened to one of his taped retreat series for religious. It was awful. Even on a hot summer day, I felt cold when he spoke, like a demonic chill had taken over the monastery. It was shortly after that retreat that I left the monastery for I could tell that it was falling into New Age stuff like a lot of convents within Los Angeles under the now retired and disgraced Cardinal Mahony.
