  • What about Catholic Cooperatives?

Here is an interesting article which refers to the concept and cites the Spanish Mondragon, built on Catholic concepts. I wonder if Drolo can give us his thoughts on this venture?

Bear with the writer, and his references (praises) of Cdl Cardijn and Bergoglio. There is still some good information and food for thought here:

Yes, it's an example of successful cooperativism, it's not just a company, but a network of companies. There are some fairly well-known companies, such as Fagor. industrial company, or Eroski, a supermarket company.

But Mondragon is not 100% cooperative, he has partners workers on the one hand and salaried workers on the other.

This news is the most rigorous that I have found about Mondragon, it's from 2013 but it will do, I don't think much has changed:

    https://www.expansion.com/2013/10/18/empresas/industria/1382130057.html

    Mondragon works like this:

    Quote
To be a member you have to pay the cooperative a Capital, (which as of 2013 was) €15,000. Thus becoming a partner. As such, the worker is responsible for the progress of the cooperative: if  does well, he receives a return or dividend based on his salary, which he will not have until he leaves the cooperative.

The profits of the cooperative group go mostly to capitalize the company. As a general rule, in Mondragon 10% of the net surplus is used for educational, social and promotional activities; 20% constitute the mandatory reserve funds; 30% go to the voluntary reserve, and 40% is deposited –in direct proportion to the salary– in the accounts that the cooperatives have in the name of each worker.

These returns are also capitalization funds, since the cooperative partners cannot dispose of them until they leave the company. Only in exceptional cases –in those cooperatives with an excellent financial situation– are these remunerations paid, with a limit of 30% of profits.

Salaries are established in the Mondragon cooperative group according to a scale of six job categories: the lowest remuneration is around 1,100 euros net per month, while, in positions of greater responsibility, the salary is around 6,000 euros . The wages of cooperative partners working in the industry are somewhat higher than those received in public limited companies in their sector.

    5. Do cooperative partners have the right to unemployment salary?

No, since cooperative partners are legally considered self-employed. For this reason, Mondragon has its own coverage system managed by Lagun Aro, also from the group. Companies allocate part of their profits annually to endow the funds with which these benefits are financed.

    6. Is it possible for shareholders to enter to raise funds from others?

The nature of the company limits this possibility, since the financial partner cannot have a majority in the capital.

There is probably not a trace of Catholicism left there. Seeing how it has almost completely disappeared from Spain

  • Thank you, Drolo, for your comments. Yes it is hard to see evidence that it was inspired and founded by a Catholic priest.

It costs an awful lot to become a member going by that link.

Here is a very interesting report from their own website showing their history.
