First Trad Confession

  • I'll be making my first confession to a trad priest (confirmed ordination in trad rite). I grew up novus ordo but my first confession was heard and my first communion given by a priest ordained in the trad rite before the changes in 1969, albeit he was still novus ordo.

    How will the trad confession go? Does the trad priest say the absolution in Latin? I know very little Latin. What words do I say after the absolution is conferred? What are the steps? Thanks for your help.

  • After confessing your sins and (if) he councils you, he should tell you to say your act of contrition, you say it aloud as he is absolving you, make a sign of the cross when he does or when you're through. And yes, absolution will be in Latin.

    Act of Contrition
    O my God,
    I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee,
    and I detest all my sins,
    because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell;
    but most of all because they offend Thee, my God,
    Who are all good and deserving of all my love.
    I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace,
    to confess my sins, to do penance,
    and to amend my life.
    Amen.

  • It will vary slightly depending on the Priest; some will pray a prayer before they hear your confession, some will pray a longer prayer with the absolution. Just listen a moment or two when you kneel down. If you hear him praying, let him finish, if you don't hear him praying, begin.

    You may want to start by telling the Priest that this is new to you, ask him to help you.

    After you are done confessing your sins he will tell you what penance you need to do, then will tell you to pray the act of contrition. While you are praying he will say the absolution. When done it is customary, and polite, to say "Thank you, Father."

    Patience is a conquering virtue. The learned say that, if it not desert you, It vanquishes what force can never reach; Why answer back at every angry speech? No, learn forbearance or, I'll tell you what, You will be taught it, whether you will or not.
