  • Are you ready for Advent? The first Sunday of Advent will be Dec 1st, 2024.

    Most of the world ignores the penitential season of Advent.   Many put up their decorations or their tree around Thanksgiving or even earlier.

    PRAYER IN ADVENT. O God, who by Thy gracious advent hast brought joy into this world, grant us, we beseech Thee, Thy grace to prepare ourselves by sincere penance for its celebration and for the Last Judgment. Amen.

    Have a Blessed Advent!!
    :pray: title=pray

    Surge, Domine, et dissipentur inimici, et eos qui oderunt te, a facie tua!
    St Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle!

  • My family has been praying this prayer called THE CHRISTMAS NOVENA for a long time.

    It starts on St. Andrew's feast day (Nov 30th) and ends on Christmas Eve.  It is prayed 15 times a day.  It can be prayed all at one or five times three times a day like the Angelus.

    Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God! to hear my prayer and grant my desires,
    [here mention your request]
    through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.
    Surge, Domine, et dissipentur inimici, et eos qui oderunt te, a facie tua!
    St Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle!

  • Hey FlosCarmeli.
    Our family have been saying the “Hail and Blessed” prayer for more than 20 years now. One can also say the prayer 3 times after each mystery of the rosary.
    Ye all have a very blessed Advent filled with many penances.

    In Christ the Child awaiting

    Ark.

  • If one doesn't pray the full Rosary (all 3 Mysteries), there is the old custom of praying the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary every day from the First Sunday of Advent until Candlemas/February 2nd/Feast of the Presentation.

    Thank you, Miseremini, for your past posts on this.

  • We have a family tradition of pulling out a fake Christmas Tree and putting little homemade name tags with all the ancestors of Our Lord on it (written on pink and purple paper).  It is our version of a "Jesse Tree". :cowboy:

    We also pray the Saint Andrew's prayer and try and give up sweets for Advent except for Feast Days like the Immaculate Conception, Saint Nicholas etc.

    I seem to have misplaced our homemade advent wreath.  So, I will have to figure something out this week.  (We usually light candles when we pray the rosary every day).

  • In the old days they had the honorable tradition of praying for THE POPE! during a Novena. (Ps. Not sure if this novena is approved by the Holy Catholic Church...?)

    https://www.ncregister.com/cna/how-to-pray-the-300-year-old-christmas-novena
    ...
    Son of Mary, while in your Mother’s womb you were welcomed by Elizabeth and her infant son, John;
    — though hidden, may we always recognize you and welcome you into our hearts.
    God our Counselor, come; tell us that your kingdom is at hand;

    — protect the Church and the pope. Keep the Church as your spotless bride.

    Root of Jesse, you humbled yourself to share our human nature;
    ....
    and yes, Advent is replete with special graces...and HOPE!
    Holy Advent to all.

    The measure of love is to love without measure.

    You could get dollar store LED candles.  They are white but you can put coloured ribbons around them. (As I recall you have a toddler and I know that I'm nervous about that age with real candles.)

  • Don't forget a Christmas Nail

    The Christmas Nail

    This is the Christmas Nail.
    It is to be hung on a sturdy branch,
    a branch near the trunk,
    a branch that will hold such a spike
    without being noticed by well-wishers
    dropping by to admire one's tinseled tree.

    The nail is known only to the home that hangs it.
    Understood only by the heart that knows its significance.

    It is hung with the thought that....
    The Christmas tree but foreshadows the Christ-tree
    which only He could decorate for us,
    ornamented with nails as this.

    That is a great idea!  We actually managed to find a cute advent wreath for a reasonable price with battery lighted candles.  I am planning to order it tomorrow as they have a special "Cyber Monday" sale with 2-day shipping. 🥰

  • Our advent tree is up.  We saved a few name tags (of our Lord's ancestors) for our youngest to put on today since he was napping yesterday when we put it up and then we got busy. 🥰
