  • What level of fear of Hell is acceptable? I sometimes become almost petrified at the thought of being damned for eternity, and I struggle with thoughts about Hell in general. What degree of worry and fear of Hell is good to have, so that I can always be aware of the eternal reward Catholics and all humans await… whether it be salvation or damnation… And what fear is simply from the devil as a means to temptation towards despair or some other sin?

Also, I should mention that the various theological differences between recognize and resist, Sedevacantist, and other Traditional Catholics, and their constant fighting only makes things worse for me. I also struggle with bad scrupulosity, though not as bad as I have had in the past.

  • Read Dealing with Scruples by Fr Dermot Casey.

You will not accidentally go to hell. You will always have the necessary graces if you seek to obtain eternal life.

As for scruples - you must be absolutely sure anything is a mortal sin (completely sure) - without any doubt.

Do not allow wannabe theologians priests and bishops to make you worried. You will not go to Hell because you take a certain position on the Pope question. It is an open question. Noboby is in Hell because they said that the Pope was not infallible before Pius IX defined it as dogma. Don't forget this. Before the Church defines something, you are free to take any position.

Fear of the Lord is one of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost. It is much better to not sin because you love God so much that you never want to offend Him, vs fearing what He will do to you, but if a healthy fear of hell keeps you from sinning, so be it. In time that should turn into not sinning for love of God.

Also, St. Theresa said that no one is saved against his will, and no one is damned against his will.

From the Novena to the Holy Ghost

    The Gift of Fear

The gift of Fear fills us with a sovereign respect for God, and makes us dread nothing so much as to offend Him by sin. It is a fear that arises, not from the thought of hell, but from sentiments of reverence and filial submission to our heavenly Father. It is the fear that is the beginning of wisdom, detaching us from worldly pleasures that could in any way separate us from God. "They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and in His sight will sanctify their souls."

    Prayer

Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may set you, my Lord and God, before my face forever, help me to shun all things that can offend You, and make me worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in heaven, where You live and reign in the unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God world without end. Amen.

"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

    I was thinking of that.
May God bless you and keep you
