  • 1. This is the perfect and reasonable fast: that our inner man prays when the outer one practices fasting. Prayer more easily crosses heaven thanks to fasting, since then, the spiritualized man associates himself with the angels and unites himself with God with greater freedom.

  • 2. Because of fasting, even the secrets of the heavenly mysteries are revealed and the arcana of the divine sacrament are discovered. This is how Daniel deserved to know, through the angel, the hidden meaning of the mysteries (Dn 10,1 ff.), Because this virtue manifests the revelations of the angels and their messages.

  • 3. The fasts are effective weapons against diabolical temptations, since with abstinence they expire soon. Hence our Lord and Savior also advise us to overcome them with fasting and prayer by saying: This lineage (of demons) does not come out if it is not with prayer and fasting (Mt 17.21), because the unclean spirits launch themselves with more violence where they see more abundance of delicacies and drinks.

  • 4. The saints while they pass the life in this world, they maintain their thirsty body by the desire of the celestial dew. For this reason the Psalm says: My soul is thirsty for you, and in how many ways is my flesh (Ps 60,2). For then the flesh is thirsty for God when by fasting it abstains and languishes. Abstinence invigorates and kills: invigorates the spirit and kills the body.

  • 5. Many times abstinence is practiced with simulation, and fasting, in turn, is performed with hypocrisy. Some, indeed, lacerate their bodies with astonishing abstinence, disfiguring their faces, as the Gospel says, so that men see that they are fasting (Mt 6.16). That is why they change their faces, afflict their bodies, break into great sighs of heart. Before dying they indulge in mortal torture and carry out such a laborious effort not for the love of God, but to the amazement of human admiration.

  • 6. Some mortify themselves surprisingly to appear holy to the curious; But such a practice of abstinence should not be considered a virtue in them, but vice, since they misuse a good.
