Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, the head of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, met with some of the Communist leaders who had imprisoned him for seven months when he was a young priest, according to the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa.
When the Communists were removed from power and imprisoned, the prelate interceded for the commutation of their death sentences. They subsequently served 20-year prison sentences.
“When I asked you for forgiveness, I did not have to repeat it again, you told me right away that you had forgiven me a long time ago,” said one former Communist leader.
