Here is an example for how this plays out in families.
The young child steals a cookie. The father disciplines (right as an authority figure). The mother supports the father while comforting the child (showing compassion and mercy.)
Most families understand this natural process.
The problem comes from when the husband disciplines the wife for showing compassion, expects a different response, then wife starts showing compassion in secret (which belittles the husband's authority) or stops being compassionate (which then doesn't teach the children compassion).
Or the husband gives up his duty and the wife becomes the disciplinarian of the family, which then leads to her having the authority, which is very disordered and a good is hard press to come out of that.
