For most of us, crisis (vs. everyday troubles) can be overwhelming, and emotion is so intense and suffocating it seems to prevent us from prayer for consolation.
What works for me:  I have a painting of Gethsemane/Carl Bloch altarpiece http://www.carlbloch.com/php/artwork.php?artwork=699 near a statue of the Pieta.
If I place myself in their hands, contemplating their sorrows,  uniting mine with theirs, I'm able to get a grip and put my own suffering in perspective.  Mine always pales in comparison.
Also, I'm always reminded of St. John at the Last Supper, resting his head on the Sacred Heart of our Savior.  When I do the same, I'm always, always calmed and comforted.

The answers don't always come right away, but peace will.

I pray the Memorare over and over and over...

Sometimes we just have to let go and let our Lord Jesus Christ and BVM shoulder our burdens for us.

Hmm... How about taking a couple of St. John's Wort pills and praying the Holy Rosary.
