  • I'm all for energy efficiency, high MPG, and low pollution.

We are very frugal with things like electricity, water, and gasoline. However, we are also Catholic, which means we haven't elected to be a childless couple (and for that matter, nature hasn't imposed that on us either). We also haven't "family planned" our family to have 1 or 2 children. In short, we have 7 children (so far).

So that means we need a larger vehicle. It also means that those 1- and 2-seater electric cars are a joke.

Today I'll be taking ONE of my children to the grocery store. So it's not a family trip. We will be using our "commuter" or most gas-efficient vehicle, which is a 2001 PT Cruiser.

We will be filling the entire back seat and floorboard, as well as the trunk, with groceries. I usually fill 2 large carts or 3 small carts total. I almost always go through the checkout counter twice, sometimes three times!

Unless you're a single person, or an individual commuting to work (i.e., no kids "coming with", no cargo to bring home), I don't see how these "Smart Cars" will be very useful.

But as time goes on, won't they be more and more prevalent? Won't a large vehicle stand out more and more, as time goes on? Perhaps there will even be penalties for being a malicious gas-guzzler? Perhaps they will stop making large vehicles, or there will be a huge fine/penalty imposed on them?

    That's what I was thinking.

  • There is already a fine/penalty imposed upon the use of gas-powered vehicles.  It's called the gas tax.  It is imposed by both the State and federal governments (and sometimes by city & county governments).

I have yet, however, to understand how electric cars do anything for the environment.  The power has to be generated somehow.  Whether its by a gas-powered generator in the car or by a power plant in some distant location, the power is still being generated by something the communists environmentalists want eliminated in order to protect their god, Mother Earth.  Please note that this includes hydro-electric power:  Environmentalists even want those electric producing dams destroyed.

Furthermore, all the electric car owners are going to be surprised when they have to start replacing the batteries and find out about the regulatory costs (imposed by the same environmentalists who told them about the benefits of electric cars) of disposing of batteries.

In any event, your story of grocery shopping brought a smile to my face remembering how it was not many years ago in our family.

  • By the way, I could re-write my whole Original Post, only talking about housing instead of transportation.

Those nifty little "small houses" are cozy and all and if I were a single guy that had never married, they'd be very tempting. But even then, it's hard to be "prepared" and live in one of those. How do you keep things that need repair, store things you got on sale, store things you'll eventually need, or buy useful things at garage sales, and store them in a "tiny home" that is only 200 SF?

It's like they're trying to engineer a world where everyone lives alone. Then when they move us all into controlled cities, housing towers, etc. there won't be much difference. Instead of a smart car for one, you'll have 1 seat on a bus. Instead of a tiny home for one, you'll have one small "unit" in a 10,000 unit Workers Residential Complex. Instead of having no children by choice, you'll have no children because the State took them away for compulsory State Education. And so forth.

  • I am always amazed at the neighborhoods that offer very small homes and even smaller yards.  Just enough yard that it would take all of five minutes a week to maintain.  I asked someone once what kind of people like those homes.  His answer was, "DINKs".  I had to ask him what that was and he told me, "dual-income-no-kids".  He told me that he and his wife were DINKs.  They had no plans to have children, but if they did, they would have only one because more than one is just too expensive.  These kinds of houses are ideal because it has enough room to entertain and have rooms that the husband and wife can have for their personal space.  It made me very sad to hear.

  • Yeah, what is pc today will be the law tomorrow.  But don't worry about it.  You can cross that bridge when you get there.  I know around here in the suburbs of Boston, MA, I see people driving those little minis with a trailer attached to the back.  You could probably build one if you are handy.  I have heard of people building trailers from scraps found at the local junk yard or town dump.  You seem like a resourceful person so I bet you will figure out some way to overcome all the obstacles that stupid government dimwhits throw in your way.
