For some time I have been interested in the history of the late Dr. Ezra Pound. For the record he was aware of the "J" Question; he was a hard money man (gold and silver backed currency); he fled to Italy and actually did radio broadcasts for Mussolini; he felt that America was lured into WWII; and he was very distrustful of high-interest banking.
His list of former students is staggering. He produced several Nobel Laureates: T.S. Eliot, Yeats, James Joyce, Robert Frost, and Hemingway. Eustace Mullins knew him as well. In fact, it was Dr. Pound who told Mullins, "Research the Federal Reserve and find out what you can and write about it." Mullins would later write a book about the Fed that got banned by the Library of Congress. It was Dr. Pound who did a good deal of editing for T.S. Eliot's poem "The Wasteland." Dr. David White told us at seminary that he thought "The Wasteland" was the greatest American poem.
Dr. Pound apparently knew six languages, including Latin and Greek. But this is where it gets interesting. In 1945 Pound was brought to America from Italy, and was found by a federal court to be "treasonous" for his Mussolini speeches. He was locked up for twelve years in a mental hospital, St. Elizbeth's (1946-58), and released in 1958, mainly due to the pressure exerted by his former students and friends. Some believe he pled 'insanity' so as not to be put to death by the US government for treason. He returned to Italy and died in 1972.
Several books have been written about Pound, but I have not read them: The Bughouse (Swift), Pound in Purgatory (Surette), Ezra Pound Speaking (Doob), and Roots of Treason (Torrey).
If anyone has any information on Pound, good or bad, I am interested to know.
