  • These things are foot powered! They don't go that fast. Even if they fell over, they're not going to crack their skull open. People are such wusses these days!

You're no higher off the ground than when you're walking on foot. Why not wear a helmet while walking as well -- "for safety" of course? You never know when you're going to fall, trip, or get pushed down.

Heaven help us if we're ever invaded.

They look like a couple of retarded dorks. I'm sure they're very nice people, but they look like complete retards.

  • I pretty much agree with you. I find myself saying the same under my breath. I would qualify this though in this present case because bikes and scooters are not allowed on side walks so they have to,by law, ride on the streets along with cars,busses,trucks--which I protest because of the danger and b/c they don't pay road taxes. But since they are required to go into the streets and not ride on the sidewalks, it might be common sense to protect the head. Plus, in your photo it looks like there are some hills to descend so it might not be all on foot and some speed would be involved. But still, a big "yes" to the fact that we have a couple of generations of wimps in our country. Good Lord, after rereading what I just wrote I hope I'm not becoming a wimp, too!

Just be glad you don't live in L.A. then, where tickets are given for not having your seatbelt buckled in a car.
It's not enough to have the shoulder strap covering your chest, if the officer peeks in and sees the buckle is not "clicked."
Even if you're a passenger in a car, the police will pull your driver over to cite YOU, even though you're not driving.
And if you don't have any ID he can handcuff you and take you into the station for being irresponsible.
If you try to convince him it's not that big of a problem, you can get cited for resisting arrest.
Put your hand in your pocket and risk getting shot dead because it looked like you were reaching for a gun.
They actually have those public message signs on the freeways saying "CLICK IT OR TICKET" in light bulb array.
    .
No helmet riding any kind of wheeled device, even a motorized handicap wheelchair -- subject to citation.
No white headlight and FLASHING red tail light on a bicycle after dusk, gets you written up, for like $40 plus PAss.
    .
Or take Santa Barbara for kicks.
Food service workers who provide a plastic drinking straw to any customer who did not ASK for one:
Subject to FINE or JAIL TIME, because plastic straws are an "environmental hazard."
    Ask any sea turtle.

Then why not wear a helmet when crossing the street as well? If getting hit by a car (when basically on foot) can result in head injury, we should wear helmets at all times. hahaha

And why don't people wear helmets when driving or riding in a car that goes 80 MPH? You're much more likely to actually need it.

It seems to me that a helmet doesn't do squat to protect you unless you're flying through the air (like in a motorcycle crash, or being ejected from a car due to a car crash and no seat belt). If one of those scooters collides with a moving car it's going to go very badly for the scooter rider -- and a helmet isn't going to do anything. It seems like a placebo to me.

Or if it's a kevlar helmet and there is danger of shrapnel -- that I also understand.

  • For them being on scooters makes them look ridiculous.

Where I live, there is seatbelt laws enforced.  In our area, the young people don't even know how to look both ways before crossing the street.
May God bless you and keep you

    .
I am absolutely convinced that pedestrians afoot lately have a death wish.
They step off the curb at an intersection without so much as turning their head to see if a car is going to turn crossing their path.
They might be looking at a smart phone or blithely walking along with ear buds listening to garbage "music."
It's turned up so loud you can hear it from 10 feet away.
Or they're riding a skate board, LEAPING OFF the curb crossing the street without bothering to look for cross traffic.
    .
    It's just nuts.
    .
By their actions it's like, "I'm so concerned about LOOKING COOL that whether I live or die or go quad takes second place."

Oh, I don't know.  These suckers can pick up some speed, especially if you're going downhill.  I've seen kids do crazy stuff on them.  If you hit your head on concrete even at 10-15 MPH, you can crush your skull and injure your brain.  Happened to my brother.  He was in ICU for a couple months and had to learn how to talk all over again.  He couldn't have been going more than 10-15 MPH.  But concrete is hard compared to the human skull.

  • Nice helmets. Perhaps they're to protect them if cars hit them.

At least this couple is happily doing something together that doesn't involve Facebook, etc.

  • Many years ago I was leisurely riding my bike in a park-- no one, no cars around me. I made a quick turn to go in the opposite direction but made it too tightly and lost my balance. Fell off, rolled down an embankment and head smacked into a tree. Fractured my wrist and saw stars for a moment. Rode home and went to the ER for arm. Wish I had a helmet for the head and the arm! Please, no wisecracks--I do know how to ride a bike--just not very well.

Your timing is odd considering a guy just died a few days ago after falling off a scooter.

Senior citizens over 55 who are dizzy could be mandated to wear helmets while using one of those walkers with tennis balls.

    ::)
To prevent hip fractures, those seniors who are skinny might be required to wear hip protector padding as well. Have those been invented yet?
    Lord have mercy.

Sounds like you got off easy! Could have been FAR worse. Better a broken wrist than a fractured skull.
    .
I've fallen off motorcycles, bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, ice skates, surfboard, belly board, ladder, tree and logs.
    .
In two cases I would have been killed if not for my excellent Bell helmet, and because of it I had no serious injuries.
Not even the helmet was damaged! Kind of scraped up but only cosmetically affected.
The sides of the helmet come down just close enough to the shoulders to not be in the way but support the top so as to transfer top end impact to the shoulders which relieves the neck of taking all the impact.
    .
Head injuries are always in a special class for medical workers, and a good helmet is a total Godsend to prevent them.
    .
In the early days of football they used leather head coverings that were adopted from aviation gear, of practically no use for impacts.
Eventually they went to rigid helmets that are universal now, but football players still manage to achieve head injuries.

Indeed, how hard to you think you have to hit your head on concrete before sustaining a serious injury?  Now imagine if your head hit the pavement without the helmet on.
