  • I remember reading that there is a dominican saying on how to engage in debate, but forgot the words! Anyone know?

I think it started with (something like): admit your commonalities, be firm in your disagreements, and then something else.

Dont' know if this makes sense- Help!

  • Asked a friend, he said it's an axiom of St. Thomas Aquinas'

"Admit your commonalities, be firm in your disagreements; Seldom affirm, never deny, always distinguish."

Though I think it requires some further explanation as to what is truly meant by the above. :)
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • This topic brought to mind the fact that the Dominicans lost the debate with Franciscan Duns Scotus over the Immaculate Conception.
