  • I've never been to a prison. I've been thinking about trying to complete the list of corporal mercy.

A helper job installing cable tv in a new prison came up. Probably a week of work, but very low pay. Would this be considered consoling the imprisioned?

  • No--more likely to be sinful for the $#!+ they'll be captive and exposed to on cable TV, than an act of mercy.  Plus you're being paid, and, I'm guessing, it's about the best work you can find for the time being.  If you can find a better job, then don't be lead astray by the idea that your helping your soul any by bringing the filth of the world into a penitentiary, where (think of the root words) people should be repenting/doing penance for their transgressions.

Now if you were only enabling strictly true Catholic programming as a volunteer, then that may be different.

  • The cable TV I have seen spew out pornography and other filth.
Keep the prisoners in their sins and live an unrepentant life to
    its end.
Many prisons today are privately owned where the Jєωs and
their freemason gentile friends can make money hands over
fists. The lawyers make money, and the judges also make
    money.
The prisoner is just like a live human stock dividend that pays
money through his cheap menial labor to a corrupt
judicial system.  Put people in jail for a long time for small
crimes.  Cause them to break the rules, and their sentences
are increased. And the money keeps flowing in.

  • Nothing that you get paid for would be considered an act of "mercy".  An act of consoling the imprisoned would be more like visiting a prisoner who had no family, or donating good books, or at least neutral ones.

  • Thank you for the insight. You're correct, it's a product/service that just wastes time and encourages sin. I don't watch TV.

It was presented to me as a way to "help" them be in touch with the outside world. Funny, how you think you're helping when in reality you're enabling.

No, it's not the best work I can find, it would be humbling and outside my comfort zone as how it saw it.

Any suggestions to fill this work of mercy?

I would suggest meet and seek the guidance of a traditional Catholic priest who visits prisons.  You are jeopardizing your all-around well-being and that of those close to you if you let criminals know much about you, which you generally have to do to get on visiting lists.

Perhaps see if you can serve thanksgiving dinner at a local jail or something that you can do and maintain relative anonymity with the prisoners but still do something meaningful for them.  Or maybe go in as a volunteer with a literacy program for a couple of days.  I don't mean start the program.  Just get with whoever is currently running the program and let them know that you'd like to volunteer for a day/week/whatever.

BTW--I would strongly advise against interacting with prisoners of the opposite sex for more reasons than I could articulate over the course of the rest of the night.

Many young pretty poor women have thing for criminals, if you do any kind of volunteering with poor minority families there will families where the father or fathers are in prison.

It's a long process to get clearance to volunteer.

  • You've got to be very careful in any sort of work with criminals, ex-cons, and people at the bottom of poverty. It's not for a lot of folks.

Seriously messed up people can seriously mess up your life if they get fixated on you, and they can quite easily for any reason whatsoever or none.

They'll be looking for an angle to get something out of you -- your personal information, so they can look you up and solicit from you, and badmouth you to your neighbors or worse if you don't cough up.
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • In some ways the elderly are imprisoned. Visit nursing home.
May God bless you and keep you
