  • Or do some go with pants? I'm just trying to find out if this is universal in the SSPX or only in some of the Masses.

Edit: it should be skirts/dresses in the topic title, but / doesn't appear in that bar.

  • In 40+ years I can count on one hand (and have a few fingers left over) the number of times I noticed a woman wearing pants to Mass. That includes SSPX and Mass at Independent Chapels.

It may have happened more often and I just never noticed.

  • That's interesting. It is official SSPX policy to not go with pants right? I seem to have read that somewhere but I don't remember.

  • Most chapels post signs.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

  • I see women in pants at my chapel, but not many. We used to have a sign, but we don't anymore.

  • I believe all of the women who come to the chapel every week wear skirts and dresses and dress pretty modestly by most people's standards. Their dresses or skirts always go down below the knees. But there are two women who come sometimes but not frequently in pants and one of the two also never covers her head. But overall there is not a big problem. At our chapel we get visitors because it is in a big city that lots of people visit and sometimes the visitors were pants or immodest skirts, but I would say that more often than not, all of the women dress modestly and not in pants.

  • I think SSPX expects skirts/dress but there are no clothing police.  The only time I have seen pants/shorts/tank tops etc have been on visitors who are clueless as to where they are.

They also come in talking loudly and march up to the front.  After they sit down they start looking around and realize that no one else is talking.  A few of them have slunk out when we stand for the procession, but most brazen it out and even waltz up to Communion.  I've never seen a priest refuse them.

  • There was a time when all Catholics wore skirts and dresses to Mass every Sunday.
There was a time when women wore dresses everyday.

In the past, I would always wear dress or skirt to Mass. Then go home and change to
jeans , shorts or dress.  I never liked slacks.

When I moved from conservative novous ordo, I went to this novous ordo parish where these older ladies wore pants.
I wore dresses.  On Eve Christmas Eve, I wore a nice formal top with long skirt.
The Choir director had attitude with me and publicly humiliated me.
He asked if I thought I was a soloist.  I said no  where I come from we wear dresses to Mass especially Christmas Eve.  Then he said I missed too many rehearsals to sing that night.  I showed him my doctors note.  He was a real creep.   (This choir director divorced his first wife and children and remarried another woman and had children with her.  )He went to priest.  I was asked to leave.  I went back and called them hypocrites.

May God bless you and keep you

  • I've seen older ladies sometimes wear trousers, especially in the winter months. Younger ones are rarer.

Whenever I do see a young lady in trousers, I always hope that no one takes it upon him or herself to "have a word" with her.

I could see how someone correcting her on her first time visit might put her off, and she may not return. A visiting woman of good will should take the hint from all of the women around her and come next Sunday properly attired. If not, then I see no reason that she should not be approached kindly, most preferably by the priest.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

Don't be too judgemental, Clare.  You should instead hope that the young lady has the right thoughts in her heart to compensate for her wanton lack of modesty.

I have seen three women at my St Louis SSPX chapel wear pants.  One was an EMT who just got off work, the other was a one time visitor (really, if being told to not wear pants turns people away from Our Lord, our own Lord had hard words about those type of people), and the other was a young teenage girl who had such an ephemereal spiritual beauty to match her actual physical beauty that I suspect she was travelling and that pants were convenient.  They were denim and loose in a bespoke throwback style as if made in the late 1940's.  Even though wearing jeans, her countenance was very serene so clearly there would be no offense taken.

Three women over a several year span of going every Sunday and holy day of obligation and all three were wearing head scarfs and only one had what could be deemed an insolent look in her eyes.

  • Many pastors will write about dressing with modesty in Church bulletins or talk about it in sermon.

  • The SSPX chapel by me has a "new parishioner information" pamphlet.  It includes dress code information for men and for women.  The women's says:
    Quote
Conservative and modest attire: loose fitting skirt or dress which hangs below the knee, loose fitting blouse with sleeves to the elbow preferred, no sheer clothing and no sleeveless clothing.  A head covering such as a chapel veil or hat is worn in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

I cannot recall ever seeing anyone not follow the dress code.  I think it helps to have it clearly spelled out like this.
