    • Hello, do you sin if you get a vulgar phrase in your head even if you are not willingly uttering it silently but it just pops in there? I am asking since this has been happening to me since elementary school. If this is a sin I don't know how I'd go about my life except eat, drink, pray, work, go to mass, and sleep.

    No, if you do not will it, but it just pops into your head unwillingly, there is no sin. In my own life, sometimes I say bad things to myself without thinking about it or willing it, and I used to confess it, but my old priest (SSPX) told me it probably was not a sin so now I don't worry about it. However I have found such unwanted thoughts help me stay humble and know that I am a worm as I figure that such things mean that I am corrupt and unworthy because if I were more perfect my heart and mind would not work in such a way.

    On the other hand, it might be that, although you are corrupt and unworthy (we all are to some degree), you are trying to live for Christ, and the demons hate that, and try to put obstacles in your path to holiness. The closer you come to your goal the more you may be harassed; at least that’s what happened to some great saints. Prepare for battle!

    • Intrusive thoughts are not sinful so long as they're unintentional and you do your best to disregard them. You have to consent to a sin.

    By the way, I'd suggest you see a doctor about this as you may have Tourettes or something similar.

    Thoughts that you do not consent to are not sins.
