    • We all know in NO church, bishops are required to retire at age 75, and cardinals effectively retire at age 80 because after that age they are no longer allowed to participate in conclaves.

    Prior to Vatican 2, it is my understanding there was no age limit on cardinals participating in conclaves.  Was there a retirement age for your typical diocesan bishop, or did they serve in their roles until death, like the pope?

    • As far as I know, they were diocesan bishops for life, unless they resigned due to old age or poor health. Even if old and ill, they could still retain the title and get auxiliary or coadjutor bishops.

    • Bishop Faure commented on this when he was to be consecrated.  Something like: " These new rules about forced retirement is evil. Just when the bishops are at their prime, best re: experience and wisdom, the Modernists get rid of them.."
