Pet Blessings?

  • Is it permitted to bless a new pet?  Note: I said “bless,” not “baptize.”
    May I use Holy Water?
    Is there a particular prayer?
I know many n.o. parishes and some Protestants hold a “blessing of the animals” on October 4, Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
    Will a priest do it?
Or would it be wrong? Sacrilegious?
    I’m adopting a cat.
My old cat died and I like having a feline companion.

  • Yes, you can bless your new cat.

There might be a prayer in the Catholic Rural life prayer book.
May God bless you and keep you

Yes, since I was a child we always had our dogs blessed by a priest, also our house, cars and property. Always.

Yes, contact your priests and he can come and bless you cat, and if you have other pets you may have them bless, also certain objects, such as your car. Years ago we had an SSPX priest bless our cat.

A man goes to visit his local church and asks the pastor if his dog can receive a funeral Mass.  The pastor, although a modernist, told him that is too crazy even for his church.  The man said,"That's a shame.  I was going to pay you $100,000 for the service."  The pastor replied, "Oh wait, you didn't tell me the dog was Catholic".
