  • One other thing. I use both internet and books to pray. When using the phone I use dark screen. Cuts way down on glare and eye strain.

  • You say them at a normal pace, the same pace you'd use to pray Paters and Aves. I often stop to consider while praying the Office. I often apply the Psalms and readings and responses to what is happening in my life or in the Church or in the world. They are not to be meditated upon in general, but you cannot help yourself sometimes.

Especially at the beginning you will be struck by the beauty and order and majesty of the Office, and this might cause you to ponder and pause more. And that is a good thing.

Praying the Office online streamlines the whole affair. Everything is right on the page. No flipping through the books, which really slows you down.

It's not a race, and if you cannot say all the Hours each day, try to get Matins in because that is the true proper of the Feast. Lauds and Vespers sometimes have proper antiphons, which also enrich the Feast. Prime is a good prayer for daily graces, and Compline ends the day with most appropriate petitions, and a commemoration of Our Lady.
Thanks. I just have a few more questions.

I can see 'ante' and 'post' before and after each hour. I am guessing these are to be done. Also do I to find different texts for each day of the week or for the feasts of Saints? Or is this automatic on the website? Or on a seperate page?

I also use my phones dark mode and also a blue light filter/night light between 6pm and 9am. Helps a bit.

    Again, here's what I do:

Matins: ANTE: Aperi Domine os meum......Domine in unione illius.......Pater, Ave, Credo....Domine labia mea aperies....Deus in adjutorium meum intende.......Gloria, Alleluia.......

Now just pray beginning with Invitatory.

Matins ends with the Te Deum. You will see right under the Te Deum, either a link to go straight to Lauds, or a Domine exaudi..... with the Collect following. If you aren't going straight to Lauds, say the Domine exaudi....and the Collect, then the ending prayers at the bottom and finish with a Pater.

If you go straight through to Lauds, NO ANTE PRAYERS. Begin with the first Antiphon.

If you come to Lauds at another time, make the Sign of the Cross, then a Pater and Ave, then Deus in adjutorium meum intende.....

    Then pray.

If I am going straight into Prime, I do not say the Pater and the Commemoration of our Lady at the end of Lauds. I save them for the end of Prime. If you are not going into Prime, then complete Lauds with the Commemoration of Our Lady.

I say the ANTE prayers once per day. I begin all the other Hours with the opening prayers, as you see on the pages. Most Hours begin with a Pater and Ave. Matins and Prime begin with a Pater, Ave, and Credo. Compline begins with Jube Domine...

Whenever you combine Hours, you need not say the opening Paters, Aves, etc. So, for example, when I pray Terce, Sext, and None together, I begin with Pater, Ave, Deus in adjutorium......

Then I pray the Office and end with the Collect. Then I go straight to the next hymn, down to the Collect, which I again repeat, then to the next hymn, down the the Collect. Then the ending prayers and the Pater.

At the end of Compline, I say the POST: Sacrosante....

Normally by this time I'm very tired, and so I pray the Commemoration of our Lady, then a Pater, then the Sacrosancte....

Then I am licensed to snore!!!! LOL!!

    _______________________________________________

On the website everything is done for you. All changes according to the Feast. You just read what they give you. And this allows you to discern the ebb and flow of the Office, the differences among ranks of Feasts, among the Commons, among the Seasons, etc. etc., quietly and over time. :)

    ____________________________________________________

WHEN TO MAKE SIGN OF THE CROSS:

    When you begin any Office.

ON YOUR LIPS at the Domine labia mea aperies.... (Matins)

At the Deus in adjutorium meum intende.....

At the adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini.....  (Prime/Compline)

    At the Benedictus. (Lauds)

    At the Magnificat. (Vespers)

On your chest at the Converte nos (Compline)

    At the Nunc Dimittis. (Compline)

At the Divinum auxillium.... (Commemoration of our Lady)

I believe the website has a big red cross where you need to make the Sign of the Cross, but it doesn't say on what part of the body.

So if you do Lauds and Prime together, you skip the end of Lauds, then go to prime, then go back to the end of Lauds?

Also so, the ante and post are done once per day. Is this optional, can I do it before and after each hour?

Pic related is what I see.

Now I would have assumed before you told me; that the BIG CROSS is a full body cross, while the little cross is the 3 we do at the Gospel.

    EDIT: From compline

Another different cross, looks like a cross with a border.

So the small is the lips only, the border cross the chest, and the big one the main SoTC?

  • Apologies for the late response -

Most gracious thanks to the wealth of information, guidance, and resources provided by everyone here. Thanks in particular to Simeon for bringing up the Divine Office (and thanks to Anthony Padua’s clarification questions that I’d have had to ask for my own education if he didn’t already), I intend to pray it daily in some form as best I can with my parents (who are “on board”).

I’ve contacted the priest I referenced in my initial post and am awaiting his response for his guidance. The information furnished here should equip me with a decent foundation to talk and hear his thoughts about.

Thank you all again - I’m sure some lurkers also benefited greatly from the Divine Office recommendation and resources.

And thank you most heartily for your continued remembrance in your prayers.

And if it hasn't been mentioned already, if you don't want to buy a physical Breviary set, use https://www.divinumofficium.com/.

Are there any physical breviarys that are Pre V2? And have Latin side with English (douay rheims)?

Baronius Press has a BXVI version with Vulgate Latin and Confraternity English side by side. It is the companion to the 62 Missal.

I don't think there are any Latin/English books for the Divino Afflatu. I got mine from a used book dealer, and it is all Latin. As a matter of fact, I even traded my BXVI books for the Divino books. And as I have no Divino books in English, I rely quite a bit on the website for Matins and to check collects or other things.

I have never been able to find a set of books with the Vulgate/Douay combination. I'd be happy to mail you my old bulky Psalter. I can have it copied and bound for you. It might be what you're looking for.

P.S. I actually like the hymn translations in the BXVI way more than the translations on the website. They are more accurate. Fr. Hall uses the same translations of hymns as the divinumofficium website. But the translations of the Psalms is all important; so I let that be my guide in choosing what to use.

And BTW, if you are trying to learn the Latin, the very best way is to use the Douay/Vulgate because the Douay is a word for word translation. No other translation will teach you the Latin like the Douay, if you wish to learn via side by side comparison.

Good grief Nous!!! Your parents are going to join you in the Divine Office?!! I'm brimming over with joy! How edifying!!!! May they be blessed forever! Such good examples!

We will be praying for you, and especially that God guide you in your conferences with your priest. Take St. Philomena with you as a guide. You cannot go wrong there.

Very interesting! I've never noticed the difference in sizes! I learned how and when to make the sign of the Cross from a priest. I already knew this before starting to use the website. So now you're up on me!

All I know is that only once do you sign your lips: Domine labia mea aperies.... (Matins)

Only once do you sign your chest: Converte nos..... (Compline)

    All other S'sOTC are normal.

Yes, you may certainly pray the ANTE and POST at each office. I'm just a lazy scoundrel!

I am reading the help section of the page, and have a question regarding the psalms.

Is Pius XII Psalter any good?

Also I did the divine office today, it was good. I started with Sexa because it was 12pm, and decided to do all the ones I missed together so I did them and then Nona. Then finished the rest at the appropriate hour.

The martins was much longer than the other hours which were much short than I was expecting. It felt very nice doing the divine office. And since it's so easy (maybe because of the website) I will definitely try to do it fully everyday.
